Hi guys,
Im John, and new to welding.
I've been looking at some local courses in the south of Ireland and the price is over €400. A decent welder could be had for that so i think i might go the self taught route...
I've been trying to decide what welder to go for and id love some advice.
The little bit ive read is pushing me towards the Portamig line.
Things id like to weld:
As far as i can see a gas mig welder like the portamig seems the best option.
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks very much for all your help...
John

The little bit ive read is pushing me towards the Portamig line.
Things id like to weld:
- Thin stuff, like a car exhaust. Mine is currently ROARING! lol
- Thicker stuff like a little tripod stand that im working on for an electronics project.
- A mechanical arm for our gate at home
- Heavy stuff like farm equipment and a gym squat rack
As far as i can see a gas mig welder like the portamig seems the best option.
- Can anyone recommend a model/supplier?
- Also what is involved in terms of maintenance of the welder?
- Can someone recommend a helmet?
- Gas bottles? Are they easy to obtain for a hobbyist?
- New wire, tips etc?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks very much for all your help...
