new to the forum, and new to welding!

hey all....

i heard about this forum on the forum i use daily, theminiforum. i am looking to start welding in general but i will be using welding on my classic mini. i was just wondering if anyone on here knows of any college classes (evening) in the sevenoaks area or around kent? or maybe some users on here teach people, i dont know.

hi Toby, cant help as I am at the wrong end of the country. best advice I can offer is find out about which welder you could use, get some steel and have a bash. Post some picks and we will see where we can help you.

Welcome, Toby, I would start by spending some time reading through the excellent tutorials here first, you'll need to work out how much cash you want to spend on kit to weld with. Welder, auto helmet, gloves, wire/tips and dont forget the gas....(IMHO £300 should get you started with reasonable gear that will actually work)
I'd recomend a clarke mig around 130amp (thereare others but,....) have a look at Weldequips shop for idea's ....Ask plenty of questions.
an angle grinder helps with a selection of disc's . the list goes on but you can add as you go...some metal sheet to practise on is Very useful.

Then get some practice in Before you attack the car!


Mini's are very popular here so you'll get lots of free advice if you get stuck!

as for course's try mid-kent colledge in Maidstone, if they still do it? I did a body resto course there several years ago, evening class, learnt a lot, was well worth the cost and time/effort.
