New to forum just today. Questions?

Hi, I'm Steve and years ago I bought a Clarke 150EN at a garage sale. Today a kind neighbor offered to teach me how to use it. He hasn't used one for quite a few years so would like to find a manual. If there is a way to find a manual, I thank you for advise. Also I do not know the difference between MIG and TIG etc. Can you advise me? Can someone explain what (EN) means in the Clarke Model 150? I have every thing to learn. I have only done Oxy - Acetylene. My 80 year old neighbor offered to teach me (a 70 year old). We are both pretty handy mechanically since we hobby with antique cars. Thanks for any help.

Hi Steve. The difference between mig and tig - well mig (or GMAW in the US) uses a wire on a reel which is fed through the torch, the wire acting as electrode and filler. Gasless wire has a flux so requires no shield, bare wire uses a co2/argon based shielding gas.
Tig (GTAW) welding is very similar to oxy/acetylene but in this case the the weldpool is generated by an arc from a tungsten electrode and filler, where required, is added by hand. Shielding gas is almost always pure argon, though helium can be used.

TIG vs MIG:

MIG - Metal Inert Gas - Welding using filler wire automatically fed surrounded by an inert gas or flux.

TIG - Tungsten Inert Gas - Welding using an tungsten electrode shielded in inert gas and arc as a heat source to create a weld pool. Filler is added manually; similar to oxy welding.

The CLarke EN models support Gas and Gasless (flux core) wire. TE and TM are gas only.

In tems of practical uses and benefits the three main arc welding processes can be summarised thus (these are general descriptions and there are of course exceptions) :

MIG : fast, economical (overall) and consistent. Reasonably easy to learn. Excellent for general steel fabrication and repetitive production. OK for aluminium and stainless. Generally works best on medium thickness metals.

TIG: Precise and controllable, for high performance applications this is usually the preferred process for almost all materials, especially exotics and very thin sections , extremely versatile. Drawbacks are that it tends to be slow, relatively expensive and requires a relatively high skill level.

Stick/MMA : relatively cheap equipment and consumables. Preferred for heavy section materials, tolerant of adverse conditions, portable. Not so good for thin sections and exotic materials. Moderate to high skill required. Well suited to heavy duty structural fabrication and maintenance.
