Well I needed a new welding mask and actually placed an order with Foster welding supplies last Friday hoping to get it for Monday.
On Monday they called me saying they had none in stock and hoped to have one in on Thursday to post out to me for today. Rang up to chase and they didn't have any, none in Holland and none in any other warehouse they had access to......
I was humming and hawing about a Speedglas 9100xx originally, Miller Vs Speedglas xx was the conundrum before I pulled the trigger on the Miller due to the price point.
So with that in mind and after a chat with Andy at Rapid who stated that the xxi actually had a bigger screen and the new true colour screen I decided just to pull the trigger on it seeing as I needed a new one.
The Speedglas xxi lens and front piece has a couple of extras over the xx as it stores two settings so you can set it for TIG and mig (or foxy, stick etc) then swap between the two just by pressing the outside button! You can also trigger the grinding mode by holding the outer button so no need to open the mask up to press buttons.
Its also got a true colour screen so you don't get that weird night vision effect, this means you can see the puddle a lot clearer (similar to the spiel on the Miller)
One of the standard Speedglas features I do like are the side windows, definitely makes it feel less claustrophobic, the Miller also works down to 5A and this goes down to 1A, I won't need to go that low but its nice to know its there....same as the fact that it uses normal batteries instead of special Miller only ones. The auto on is also a nice feature, no need to press the on button like on the old Speedglas
I've not had a chance to use it yet but I'm hoping to get welding this weekend or Monday at the latest, coming from a Weldability helmet this is a huge step up as far as vision and comfort goes. The helmet definitely feels a lot nicer on the head once you set the head bands up properly
You can see the truer colour in that photo, thats a turned ally shifter handle and a camouflage jacket and they don't look anything like they did through the old helmet, the fact that I'm indoors with a light above my head means the photo is a little skewed, its slightly better than what you can see in the photo when its on your head
