Grind off the washers from the new dumb irons and weld on ones of the correct size. It's the usual fix for holes that have worn due to siezed spring eye bushes.
You may find if you buy Britpart spring eye bushes they are also a larger size, maybe for a modern metric bolt. Just a thought!

Well done on your welding mate. Sometimes the only person to benefit from galvy chassis is the guy you sell it to. I have 61 2a with Marsland 5yr old chassis. Bought it from a guy in his 70s. It awaits rebuild. He replaced chassis when he was 68!! Why do things to last a lifetime when you don`t have a lifetime left?

Those Landy chassis can be welded up a lot easier than a Jap one. My Patrol was best fourby I ever had but no chassis available except from Nissan (6 grand) Welded it up to MOT standard and sold. Still on road two years later.

I`ve seen guys replate the whole Landy chassis. Yeah it will rust through new metal but it`ll be a long time and a few owners down the line. I heard LWB Series aint available from Marsland now?

Amazing you are still with Series Richard.......after all this time. Landys are more fun anyway!

If you need a new chassis anyway it's the difference in price between galvanised and plain that you have to consider, not the absolute cost of the galv. chassis.

I started fitting a galvanised chassis to my SIII when I was in my fifties, and I don't look like finishing the job until I'm in my later sixties!

The current one has a standard 3 bearing 2-1/4 petrol with LPG conversion, I did have one with a Perkins 4203 diesel engine once.

I don't know if I'll ever finish this project though.

Yeah once you let the iron go cold an all. This Landy has 3mb pet too. Where is your LPG tank.? I am honestly thinking of 200td without the turbo. It seems to make sense.......apart from noise. Sorry to OP for OT blurb..........still Landys mind you!

Progress

Hi ,well a bit more progress to update ,
the steering relay is moving in the chassis at last,hydraulic puller to the rescue, belting with a hammer and swearing didnt work[must have offended it], the front dumb irons fully welded and within half a mm or so of alignment with each other,5mm thk 9/16 bore washers made using holesaw and drill,will be welded on in place of the britpart crap ones @16mm,awaiting some long strips of 2mm plate to tidy the rear chassis sections then paint and start the reassembly of the chassis,
Then the next welding challenge ---the teabag bulkhead both footwells and both door pillars, where to start!!?thanks for replies,

what happened with the rest of the build? i'm looking with interest as i'm after a series 2 myself. the one i've got in mind definitely needs a new chassis, i know that much, so will be looking at a chassis swap, can you still get a new chassis for £700? i can only find galvanised ones for £1300

As far as I'm aware the only place doing series chassis now is Richards and yeah I think they're around 1300

Marsland no longer make Series chassis, and Richards have put their prices up a lot in the last 5-6 years, £1300 is about what they cost now. Still worth the money though, if your original chassis is toast.

cheers guys, thought that may be the case... i asked richards how much it would be to have an ungalvanised chassis, they said it would only save £40, which i found strange. guess that price comes with being the only replacement chassis manufacturer it seems.
Ive got to get rid of the bmw i started stripping last year before i can start to think about filling the space it takes up, but a proper inspection would take place before anything is ordered, IF i get it.
I'm studying welding and fabrication at college, so no reason why i shouldn't be looking to repair the chassis. i kinda wanted it as a fabrication project, unless its totally gone. the bulkhead is in surprisingly good condition, so maybe i was just unlucky that the only place underneath i looked was an outrigger which was missing...

we'll see, but thanks for the info!
