Well, thank you all for your opinions and advice, I really appreciate it all, particularly Tom. I've taken the plunge and finally made the purchase... a shiny new GYS Multi Pearl 200-4XL will be with me soon 
It's a huge outlay for a novice hobbyist but one I'm hoping will pay off with a high quality machine and an easier learning curve as a result.
Once I've got some gas sorted out I'll let you all know how I get on

It arrived on a pallet. Frustratingly I couldn't get any time to try it out until today.
I phoned BOC on Friday and set up an account over the internet, via email form. All very quick and easy. I asked for the hobby welder's gas deal and got the prices mentioned earlier in this thread. I went into my local BOC depot (only a mile away from me) and got a Y sized cylinder of Argoshield Light. Paid for at the end of the month via Direct Debit.
Whilst setting it up I realised the gas hose connector for the regulator wasn't included with the welder. The hose, and the quick release connector for the welder end was, but not for the other end to connect to the regulator. Anyway, I got one locally. The hose comes bare, requiring the connector(s) to be fitted. Then I had to fit the reel of wire which I had ordered with the welder. It's just as well that I had done this before as the instruction manual, which amounts to only a few pages, gives no instructions at all really. It assumes prior knowledge. So if you've never done any mig welding before you may well not get up and running very quickly with a GYS machine... thank God for the internet! I had to consult the net a few times to make sure I was doing things right, especially with the gas hose and regulator connections. I've never connected gas in my life before today and, although it is fairly logical, some instructions/diagrams would help. The welder has none in the manual, and even the regulator itself has no instructions whatsoever. Minor grumbles, perhaps, but I expected at least a picture of how to do it!
Anyway, I got everything safely connected, checked for leaks, checked the gauge settings on the gas regulator where what was suggested on the net, checked with a flow meter, and then began to set the machine up on the digital display. I followed the instruction manual page for Synergic Mig Welding, typing in the settings. There are a few errors in the manual, but they're easy to spot (it tells you to press a knob that only turns...!). Once this was done, I was ready! Water spray bottle and fire extinguisher at hand, I laid down a few practice welds, shown in the pics for anyone to let me know if I'm doing it right.
As I said earlier in the thread, I've only ever done gasless mig welding with my old Cosmo 170, and very little of that really. The difference using gas was immediately apparent- it's SO smooth! Gasless is like a mad professor's firework display... or at least it was when I did it!
Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. It seems very well made, a smooth casing, well designed, evenly weighted and so very easy to carry, very clear digital display and the Binzel Torch seems really nice to use. The mains cable is extremely thick cable and is of a high quality too. No spares are included though. I expected at least a spare tip or two... bit tight!
The 4 roller wire feed is everything I hoped it would be- very smooth operating and didn't miss a beat while I was using it. Made the old Cosmo feel as though someone was cranking it by hand... Lol!
I've only tried it on one piece of sheet steel, which measured 1.1mm with my digital calipers. I've written on the steel what the welds were. Please let me know how I'm doing because it's all new to me really!

Im no expert but your runs look somewhere near....suspect your travel speed is a bit erratic, gence the different weld profiles. Possibly raising and lowering the torch slightly.
I find i get far better results using two hands left to steady the torch, other on the trigger. Have a practice run of the route.

I've hardly even scratched the surface of its capabilities but I believe it's a great machine and I'm really pleased with it! The wire feed alone is something I'd only previously dreamed of! Lol.
Probably correct, I've never had the steadiest of hands... although I am using two on the torch as you suggest. I find left to right much easier than forward or backward.
I actually find it difficult to see where I'm going... I have a generic (probably) Chinese auto-darkening helmet and maybe that doesn't help. For the last couple of welds I tied a tiny LED torch onto the mig torch; this helped a lot.
For car bodywork repair I think I'm on the right track though, especially as you won't see the welding!! They have good penetration, slightly raised on the back with a good heat pattern right through. After the sheet had cooled I whacked f**k out of the patch joins, forcing a screwdriver into the gap at one end and chiselling it with a hammer. I couldn't get them to break, not even slightly, so a good sign

totally agree with Addjunkie, someone on here had the bright idea (groan..) of fitting a few these cheap LED lights on the top of the shield. Simple, I copied it, think the two of them were around a fiver from ebay, and added a cheater lense inside at the same time. What a difference night and day.. I think if you can see what you're doing you're more than halfway there.

Did some more welding today, the downpipe on my old Citroen CX had completely split right around its circumference. Luckily it is a twin downpipe and the other one was completely undamaged. A strange thing to happen... Anyway, I spotted a broken support bracket further down the system which probably explains it. I removed the downpipe and the bracket, welded 'em both up in minutes. Job's a good un! Never took any pics, sorry. Welds were good though, and the exhaust is gas tight so I reckon I did ok!
One of the biggest surprises for me is the difference using gas makes- I hadn't realised! Welding with fluxcore wire on my old Cosmo was rough and difficult, and the spatter just went everywhere. Welding with gas and aided no doubt by the smooth wire delivery of this new machine... night and day! I couldn't be happier
