hello just joined to see how hard it is to weld and also to ask what i would to start welding i have never welded before so totally new to it i have got a car and its needs some welding done so thought i need to learn it will always come in handy thanks.

Welcome Garyzetec, you'll gat a lot of good advice here, there's some well experienced folks on this forum. Er, I'm not one of them!

its like anything if you can weld its not hard at all, it depends on your ability and how well you pick things up.
obviously you will need a mig with a low start amperage 30amps should be ok, a grinder, something to cut sheet steel, tin snips are ok but a power tool for the job makes things quicker and easier on the hands then basic things like hammers and so on

Hi all,
Another new member wanting some advice. Has anyone any experience of Power King MIG welders? I see them advertised on e-bay at a seemingly cheap price and was wondering if it would be wise to invest in one(140 Turbo fan Cooled gas/no gas).
Before you take the plunge first check how deep the water is!

If you want to weld steel and can afford it get a Portamig transformer MIG, they start at £588 from Weldequip on this website, he has sold to many satisfied forum members on here (Bought one off him myself, 5 or 6 years ago and its still going strong)

Otherwise maybe a Clarke or somesuch. Depends what you want to weld really though. Is it cars, ralings, or whatever, is it Ally or steel, thick or thin etc etc ? These will all affect the type of welder that you need.


There are many on here who have learned on bits of scrap metal (better known as old cars ) The best way if you have one near you is a night class at your local college. You get it almost free if you are unemployed and even if you have to pay up a few hundred for the course, its worth it to get 3 hours a week straight welding practice on as much steel as you can carry. Then at the end you get a City & Guilds certificate or similar.

Hi and welcome.
The clarke welders are good but get the best that you can afford.
Weldquips service is really good.
Mig is probably one of the easiest to pick up I would say.
Have a look through the tutorials though.
They really do help.
