New LR defender

It’s a mule so you can’t say if it’s accurate or not. It was also due in 2018 and having built defenders that sold for that based on tdi engines I’m keen as mustard to see one and know a few that will buy one when there first out as they made money on the four of the last editions they brought used and sold for a profit

It has to be a modular base especially in lwb or the utility companies won’t use it.

I’m an active Landy owner and hate the way the new models have gone. Saying that a defender isn’t an attractive car by any stretch nor is a disco 1,2,3,4 and certainly not the 5

Can’t see that happening, if you want to go from a hardtop van to a single cap pickup it will be a whole body change not the dozen or so nuts and bolts we are used to.

I’d like to see a half monocoque ban them removable rear body and built in a chassis. I do know there build there own engines currently in Luton

Is 40 k that rediculous, a top of the range hillux is about that! But the landrover will be full of electronic widegry, so will be a worry as soon as its out of warrenty

40k for a top of the line model yeah fair enough but not as a starting price and you must not get much for your 40k if the predicted topping out price is 70k im unsure how they would justifiably fill a 30k price differential. Even the defender works was stupendusly rediculus at a 150k for something you could do on a 20k budget no bother at all and have change.

I am a little disappointed that production is going abroad, I can only assume the companies number crunchers have weighed up all the options ,we are now faced with importing a land rover with all the associated tariffs. No doubt the rest of Europe will benefit from a more realistically priced landy. Most of land rovers products have done well,hopefully this one will as well.

I think land rover has lost all sense of its herritage and an indian guy on ship i was disscusing it with a while back says its because tata dosent belive in herritage and it dosent matter anymore, i think the company is in for a gargantuan shock when it realises people care a lot more about a companys herritage than they think. Esspecially people with money. It was confirmed ages ago the new defender would be made in the new slovakian plant which proves the company dosent care about herritage anymore really it just makes a song and dance about it.

Say the base model is as it used to be a basic 90 truck cab or van, for 40k. For that you could have a top spec Japanese pickup.

Should give them a chance first see how the new model fairs in the Dakar rally or rainforest challenge

Actually from a buisness perspective it beggars belief they didnt modernise along the way, for years they knew the older design didnt cut it. Basically they walked away from the huge taliban armoured car market years ago.

Also should have had a replacment ready far quicker than they have. Hey ho.

Yep,
They didn't do it all that well for the price, with lots of stuck on bits ect but the g wagon managed it.

The latest g wagon only shares a silhouette and nothing from the old one. Having had a g55 amg there amazing and crap at the same time my ex boss has a few in stock and the new one he hates compared to the 55, or even the 63, before it became the v8 4.0 bi turbo

Pure stupidity that, most of the car or bike manufacturers now are using heritage to promote themselves. Mini is pure heritage, and Triumph motorcycles uses it hugely, Steve Mcqueen and all the Hollywood stars who rode them around back in the 60's, the Jump in "The Great escape" and all that.

Weirdly enough they did try with the challenger project and various others but every time some big customer such as the british army or one of the utility companies would come along and say its good but it aint as good as the defender so the replacements always got cancelled.

Very true but you cant deny that is what they are trying to use and if thats the case they are going to find it really hard if they dont stick with it. Their products are so bad these days they cant stand on thier own to feet with out it.

Land rover, like toyota, merc porsche, lexus etc, have dropped the farmer/builder/civil engineer market, and are now concentrating on the school run mums, big puffed up saloon cars that will never see a mucky field, let alone be used for anything serious off road, or on road come to that. The old merc g-wagon was a serious bit of kit, because they were sold mainly to the German military, so they would be used in anger off road. Same with the first toyota land cruiser, it was a tough no nonsense off roader.

I don't know who is making a 4x4 that is not a tarts handbag ?

What happened to that rich fella who was trying to get production of the old defender going again ? Did he pack it in ?

Hes still on the go project grenider i think its called if you type it i think hes struggling to settle on a design and secure funding to get it off the ground. Got a website now.

The 70 series land cruiser is still good

Which is made in Gibraltar and can only be bought in the middle east, some parts of africa and australia or Belgium seen one in a dealership there recently god only knows how it got there. The 70 series is great but difficult to import there are only 3 currently in the uk to my knowledge including Andrew st pieer wyhtes from the south african 4 wheel drive tv show. They are supposedly very difficult to get parts for.

The old Patrol's were great, but they rotted like billy-o. There were loads of them around in Ireland, mechanicals were great, but the bodies were like lace-curtains.

Almost all the farmers and builders round here have Japanese pickups, not brilliant off road but more comfy than a Defender and cheaper. Also good at towing the huge trailers they all have.

I think the series, or maybe the Defender, is still in production in Iran, strange someone hasn't defied Trump and imported some. Perhaps the true reason the Defender died was it wouldn't pass EU safety rules for new vehicles any more.

The reason the Defender died is to expensive to build and not enough units sold, told to me by a top man at LR
And word wide it is not a great seller unlike the Jap trucks
