New laws vs mail order tools

There's currently amendments to the Offensive Weapons Bill going through parliament that relate to banning "bladed articles" being delivered to residential addresses. This would effectively kill off a lot of online tool sales if you can't get any bladed tools delivered to your house. The bill also relates to the delivery and possession of corrosive substances and is obviously a reaction to the recent spate of acid attacks.

They seem to define a blade as a sharp article that can cut somebody's skin. No more drill bits? lathe tools?

It won't affect the supply of weapons, they'll just go underground and yet again the innocent user loses out.

Write to your MP about this. I doubt they'll do anything about it but at least you can make it known that you're not happy about it.

I wonder if it will affect items delivered to "click and collect" drop off places?, I have Amazon orders delivered to a local Post Office for collection.

Yes, it also bans deliveries to lockers.

Rather than stopping deliveries of blades articles, why not take these Zombie knives, etc off the market?! Anyone found buying or selling is treated the same as a drug dealer, and arrested..

Just because amendments have been suggested doesn't mean they'll ever see the light of day. Not even a politician could be stupid enough to not see the flaws in that type of thing.

Hopefully these amendments won't go through, however I wouldn't underestimate the stupidity of our current crop of politicians.

Which is why you should write to your MP who may possibly be one of the not-so-stupid ones.

I wanted to make people aware of this and maybe try to do something about it.

I even wrote to my own MP, something I've never done before.

They certainly can read, we did a lot of writing to MPs back in the early 90's that is why you can still buy a motorbike with over 100 BHP and it does not have to be fitted with leg protectors.

Please read this section 141B before going off the deep-end:

(3) The seller is not to be regarded as having proved that they took all reasonable precautions and exercised all due diligence to avoid the commission of the offence unless, as a minimum, they prove that the following conditions are met.
(4) Condition A is that, at the time the offence is alleged to have been committed—
(a) the seller operated a system for checking that persons who bought articles to which section 141A applied by the same or a similar method of purchase to that used by the buyer were not under the age of 18, and
(b) that system was likely to prevent persons under the age of 18 from buying such articles by that method.
(5) Condition B is that when the package containing the article was dispatched by the seller, it was clearly marked to indicate—
(a) that it contained an article with a blade or which was sharply pointed (as the case may be), and
(b) that, when finally delivered, it should only be delivered into the hands of a person aged 18 or over.

If you have previously bought from the supplier and have your details saved on their on-line system prior to all this nonsense, then the supplier has confirmed that your credit card registered address matches the delivery address. Now only needs you to tick a box confirming you are over 18 and Bob's your uncle. Unless you can only have a credit card in your own name if you are over 18?

Might cause a little heartache for tradesmen having items from Toolstation delivered to a worksite though.

So an extra layer of bureaucracy for the law abiding with no impact whatsoever on the lawless.
