new lathe older than most of us

Recently bought a lathe for home project use ,still trying to find information and spares for it ,manual,new chucks 5" 3 and 4 jaw,and eventually faceplate etc ....needs levelling and setting up ,waiting for a green grinding wheel to arrive as well,bit noisy but doesn't stall or struggle,unfortunatley only imperial threads unless i can find a 127t gear change wheel for less than £100 ouch...but does feed in 2 directions ,came with a stack of drills and dead centres etc but i got it cheap so can build up as i go ....haven't got an exact date but 1940-50 i think

Looks nice.

You can cut metric threads if you have a 44 and 52 tooth gear. That is what the Atlas lathes use. Supposedly it is good to 1 part in 3000.

I use it with a thread calc program that you enter all the gears you have and the feed screw pitch. It calculates the gears to use.

The only limitation is you can't disengage the half nuts. You must do a pass, stop, rewind back and do next pass.

Did a few metric threads on mine including a 50mm x 1.5mm for a ER-40 collet chuck I made.

I was not talking about reversing the feed but reversing the entire lathe. Since all metric threads will not be an even multiple of the lead screw pitch, you can't disengage the feed and start in the same place later using the threading dial.

You can't use the normal threading dial. I saw a smart and brown for sale with a metric/inch threading dial, it looked like it had a gearbox inside it[chart of pitches on it and a lever]. I have a dog clutch on my lathe and can reverse the leadscrew. Without loosing synch. Combine that with a cross slide threading stop and it couldn't be easier;-)
I bought a pretty comprehensive set of myford/harrison/boxford gears, about thirty of them, inc a 127T. I bought them for the 127T, but it didn't fit in my headstock, my lathe uses a smaller pitch gear for the metric compounds. I calculated every pitch within a small error of all popular metric pitches that I could cut with compounds made of any of the gears I had[apart from 127T], for me 60/55 and 60/50 cover most popular pitches and the 1mm pitch is something like 1.0001mm, if only my leadscrew was so good;-) 1.75 is the difficult one, it's some time since I worked it out but the pitch I cut is something like 1.755mm, which works fine. You can't have my Fortran program, I lost it and the data files;-(
I remember that with my gears 60tpi is 1mm and hope I put the right ones in. It was only recently I had to cut a 19tpi and I couldn't find the notes or the program I sat and worked out what gears would be best. I can post the method if you want, it's not to hard to work out. If you look at you gearing and the gearbox, write it all down as fractions it becomes fairly clear.
