The rover p3 lump was what was eventually used wasn't it ? The lad in the show also had a 4.0L jag engine in a series two landy, don't know if there is any point to it, other than needing an engine and having an old jag engine lying around.

Hi, Yes the 4 cylinder IOE engines in 1600 and then 2000 were the first engines. The Land Rover had been in production for a while when they were used as the RR test mules.

I had the option of a nice series 2 (I forget if it was an A or a B) a few years back for <£500, been dry stored for a good few years...never seen one that cheap since...everyone locally seems to think "landrover worth a fortune innit"

Its the same with everything, old brit motorcycles have gone through the roof price wise in the past few years. Old junk with wheezy small capacity two stroke engines, going for thousands

Yes here in the west country they are at a premium, winter use for a lot also status, drove from Nuneaton to Cornwall today and went past a lovely Range rover, there was something wrong with it though, it was in the left hand lane! !!!!!! probably on way back to dealer,

Without even going into capris in rotten nick going for high 4 to low 5 figures...and "experts" speculating they could be worth £35K soon...madness...

A lad i worked with years ago bought a capri, one lady owner, garaged all its life, 26 miles on the clock, £4,500, he flew to london and drove it back to dublin. I was sceptical, but when i seen it, it really was brand new, still had the plastic on the seats ! That was about 12 years back. What would it be worth if he found it now ?

Hi, The RR Land Rovers were built to proof test the engines which were a new development, a lot of the Land Rovers suffered greatly doing this because the engine was a heavy old lump.

It was the B40, the 4 cylinder variant of the engine in Humber Pigs, Alvis Stalwarts/Saladins/Saracens, Daimler Ferrets, Dennis fire engines and loads of other things. The 4 cylinder ended up in the Austin Champ as well.

Done for evaluation of the land rover and austin champ by the army wasn't it ? I see one sold last year in holts for nearly 50k !

IIRC from an article about Ken Wheelwright's collection in one of the LR comics they were built to evaluate whether a B40 powered LR would be practical, as it would remove the need for rover engine spares in the logistic train, but the B40 was too heavy and as supplied had a power curve illsuited to offroading.
