New email address

Hello, the backup email for my gmail account is an old freeserve address, which died years ago.
I'd rather not have another gmail, nor microsoft email address.
Which email provider would the brain bank use?
I use Thunderbird and Firefox, running in Ubuntu.

My preference is for a real email address from your own domain, at surprisingly very little cost.. You have total control and your mail doesn't get scanned by companies looking for sales / advertising opportunities like Google etc all do. You can choose your own domain name eg, babadec.co.uk and have unlimited email addresses because whateveryoulike@babadec.co.uk will come to you. You can also separate addresses out and bar some for SPAM reasons etc. Like @cheb I use 1&1 and have done since the 90s.
A proper email / web domain also looks far more professional for business that @gmail etc.

You can also give your family / friends their own email box at your domain should you wish; name@, nextname@ etc.

I deliberately spelt the domain wrong because I wonder if the intended domain suddenly gets nicked by a pirate before you can book it.

refused gmail myself

ive had loads of trouble with microsoft recently even had an old account overwritten by someone making an account via windows 10/11 that shouldnt have happened but i can assure you that it has lost a 22 year old account through it happening

went with proton instead and made a few accounts there

Another vote for Proton Mail, been a paying customer for years, quality of life improved noticeably.

Proton also support custom domains.

Mostly I use my own domain names and mail servers but Proton is good for privacy, but I always double take a little when I see a proton mail address, as some of the users I've dealt with have been on the shady side of things. Ive used their vpn on occasion though...
I use a gmail address on my phone, but I dont do anything I'd consider private on that as its android anyway.
I have a yahoo.com email address that I've had for 10+ years just to test my other mail solutions with real test mails from a remote system, and I just logged into it now being inactive for more than a year, and it still works, although its expunged my old mails from inactivity.

I have a yahoo.co.uk and hotmail.co.uk accounts both for over 20 years with no issue and accessible online anywhere

hotmail got annoying wants everything verified 2 factor veri connected to your mobile phone and lately wanted a connection to a windows 10/11 account

hotmail also tried country origin but couldnt with mine as they was old

as i refuse to create a windows 10/11 computer ive found that someone has over written my account details with there account created on that type of windows 10/11 account, it shouldnt have happened as the account is years old but ive had an old account overwritten and unable to access this account

yahoo was the worst for me old accounts lost due to bt yahoo seperating

same with blueyonder email accounts lost due to no longer with the company

Other than an aversion to huge companies, there's little wrong with a Microsoft email address. At least you're never going to suffer from the OP's situation with freeserve going bust.
