I did deliberate over that for a long time but finally decided a mains connection is maintenance free and my usage will be low.
It was things like a fridge freezer running 24 hours a day while I am not there that decided it for me, plus having a 25kw feed means I won't have to start the generator for stuff in the workshop.

If you have the option of mains, go for it - living off-grid is a right pain

16k sounds cheap. And lets not forget that's an estimate. I'd be nailing them down to a quote first.

I built a substation 4yrs ago for a 300kw supply, just for the board to pull the cable through our ducting and terminate both ends was moonbeans over that, they did it faster than they estimated and still wanted more

I thought it sounded cheap too... for a 25kw 3 phase supply, that's a nice lot of power.

Sounds like you will have some nice power. Glad you had a good experience with the DNO.
I have only had to deal with them a few times one went like yousr and we were able to work with them to find the best price/compromise.
The rest were basically met with it'sour network we decide whats going to happen and how much, take it or leave it.
Whenever HV is involved you can always put a couple of noughts on the end of the price.

We were very lucky on the old farm my workshop is based from, we were on a old overhead supply form a small shared transformer at the end of the drive and across a main A raod.
Got them to fit supply monitoring equipment to prove we had a volt drop on load way below the allowed percentage.
In the end they went for a HV network upgrade with new transformer/substation, and a new 3 phase underground supply with a cable the diameter of a scaffold pole.

16 k ouch, but it does open up opportunites, like living there too once you have juice.

Is the supply from the pole to you over ground or under ground.

I really should pull my finger out and chase my quote.

My quote was 80k 10yrs ago folks, probably over 100k now. 16 is nothing

Very wise words indeed, an estimate is just that, something which can go up or down, a quote is rigidly fixed within certain parameters.

£16K is a big number but I would bet it would make more than that in price difference to a property in the long run(it would probably made it cheaper when you bought it too). It would certainly make it far more saleable. If it was added to a mortgage it would only add a few quid a week.I think it's one of things that you just need to do while you are in a position to do it and 3 phase opens a whole new tool buying path.
