From what I recall, book time for a clutch on a Moggie is/was 21/4 hours, taking the gearbox out. I had the box out on the series 2 I had 50 odd years ago many times & used to leave the floorboard bolts out & could do it & back in in an evening.

If you put the bolts in the other way round, it’s easy next time! Never heard of torsion bar being damaged, but I haven’t messed around with Minors for many years though (that sound bad doesn’t it)

Good to know, I bleive the 1000 is more awkward to get the gearbox off but your suggestion is probably a lot quicker than removing the engine
They still make a lot of parts, I do not believe the actual cars are in production, but unlike this country they do not rot over there.

As an aside, I rebuilt the gearbox in the middle of a New Forest campsite when I was young & foolish. The box stripped a gear when we were on holiday, up on a Jack, box out & stripped it. People kept coming round, sucking through teeth & commenting “you won’t get that going” but we did, had to to get home!

Not from what I recall, I fitted a 1000 box in the series. Fittings are the same, just the 1000 has a remote. Oh & the mountings to the crossmember are different, not that makes it more difficult

Check the clutch arm is not skewed\twisted & change the carbon release bearing

I do not know as I have only worked on a 1000, but others (who seem reliable) say that on previous engines you did not need to twist and shuffle the gearbox to remove it which if you are not careful can damage the clutch?
actually , , I fined it tends to be thirty year ish old short women who wear out clutches
driving in heels and covering the clutch kills them , now why you would need to cover a clutch , but still be able to find the brake pedal is well beyond me , but then again Ive never understood women any way , and I cant see that changing.

It looks to me that @tlovatt was more than halfway to convincing himself not to replace the clutch components when he started the thread - apologies to him if I've interpreted it wrong

For my 2p worth, I'd replace the whole thing when I was at it...just for the warm glow of satisfaction what would accrue, with the comfort of knowing I'd 'done it once & for all'

If my recollection of the thickness of a new clutch is correct then I have made my mind up not to replace it, I was just after confirmation that I have got it right.
Problem is that warm glow would only come from replacing all of the part worn parts, but on a restoration to do so will add thousand of pounds of cost. There are some things I am replacing, such as the seat belts (hopefully will never rely upon them, but if needed I want them working) but many other things should have plenty of serviceable life left in them and it they will last another 15 years then I want to leave them in place.

It’s a long time ago, but from memory, the bell housing & main cast part of the box is the same on the 948’s & 803’s only the tail ends are different. The 1098 boxes have stiffening ribs down & the clutch is bigger. The bolt holes are the same, so I think the bell housing is the same size. On all of them you have to twist the box to get the top part of the bell housing to clear the bulkhead. As I said, it’s many years since I was involved with anything A series, so the old memory cells could be playing up.
Seen a few old plates fail - springs break and rivets fail. If you're rebuilding it to outlast you, then makes sense to change it - if you only need it to last nearly as long as you, same theory would mean a good thick layer of filler over the rust and roller applied dulux would do the same for the outside . . .
