Not a Disco (sadly)
Friend has a new Galaxy 3.0 Diesel Auto - *terrible* fuel economy (maybe the way she drives) seems to cost her about 40p/mile!
I don't much about newer cars - I *hate* depreciation! - I tend to buy "end of life" cars for not much more than scrap price, run em for a couple of years, then scrap them for my money back.
Having said that, I can see the one I have now outlasting me!
It's 3.0 Auto Lexus - GS300 on a '99 plate with 138K on the clock for which I paid about £1000 (including what I paid for a full service/new tyres + battery + 12months tax).
It still drives like new. Passed every MOT first time with no advisories, and has needed (except for consumables) two brake light bulbs in 16 years.
Fuel economy is not the best - costs about 30p a mile - but an LPG system for £1200 would save 12p a mile, and pay for itself in 10,000 miles (or about 24 months the amount I use it).
I think the lexus is better than a Jaaaaag - friend has a 4.0 XJ6 (2005 - he bought it near new about then, but it's a private number plate, so not sure).
Lexus is quieter, more comfortable, better to drive, more reliable and doesn't stand out as much (useful where I live!)
The LS400 is better still (4.0 engine, but about the same mpg (on paper) as the 3.0) - drives like (I imagine) a rolls royce, looks a bit like an older Merc S class
It's supposed to be THE most reliable car ever - there are accounts of cars with a million miles on the clock with only service items ever needed.
Even with 200K on the clock, drives so quietly you can't hear the engine - inside or out (and if you can, walk away).
I test drove about a dozen before buying the GS300 and they were all the same. Only exMrsEgg stopped me getting one, cos she decided it was too big to learn to drive in.
Course, if you need the boot space, you could always buy a transit with what you save out of your 12K - mine costs me about 1K a year in insurance, service items/maintenance and tax - it easily pays for itself in saved delivery charges when buying furniture or DIY stuff or doing "favours" - not to mention I spend most weekends sleeping in it when I'm up in the dales cycling/walking.
