New car. Pleasantly surprised

Well, after landing a new job, I had to get a car fairly sharpish.

So I've just picked up a Citroen C5 54 plate 110 HDi. Huge mileage as it used to be a taxi, 182000, but only just passed an MOT.

Seems really sound for such high mileage.

Anyone else had one? Anything I should be looking for?

Gotta try and find a supply of used veg oil now lol

Oh and the car was 500 quid

the HDI engine is NOT veg friendly im a afraid only one person i know that has ran a hdi on veg he's now on the third high pressure pump.
unless you cold filter veg by gravity to sub 1 micron then blend to the same specific gravity as diesel all you will do is kill the HDI pumps low pressure one in the fuel tank high pressure one in the engine
the ones that are veg friendly are the Citroen pug 1.9 turbo diesels 1905cc
in the 405 early 406 806 expert van again zantia relay van all turbo diesels with Bosch pumps not the Lucas pumps
all good fun

will run on bio but again needs to be very well filtered and not in winter as bio gels unless you add 5/10% petrol

Have to disagree on the veg angle. I know people who've ran HDI engines successfully on veg and even blends of Derv with used engine oil. The HP pumps aren't exactly bomb proof on straight derv anyway, its not if it will go, but when. Often the IMV is the weakest point on the fuel injection system.

the HDi is a great engine but a bit thirsty if you use it to its potential

Driving it reasonably it returns good economy. The 2.0 is bombproof really if its not been messed around with. My dad had a 406 2.0HDI and after buying another car he went back and got another because of how well they drive. One of Peugeots better efforts for sure.

Local taxi driver has 260k on his and he still swears by it.

We have a 2.0hdi Berlingo 90hp and as above be careful with the veg. I wouldn't bother as ours does over 40mpg driven normally and never noticed it being thirsty even on motorway runs at the limit or towing the trailer tent

some of these bio diesel can be a bit on the thick side and that is not good for the pump.
i will never use bio diesel as i have seen what it can do to the pumps etc.
a fiend of mine with his sprinter van has had two pumps and a set of injectors and each time this has happened it was down to contamination as the oils where separating after a hour we had some in a big jar was not good.
the thing is you really do need to be careful where you get it from.

i have a kia sedona and they are known to have problems with the injectors.
mine went south at 100.000 miles pump was giving good pressure bit it was replaced just to be on the safe side.

its the delphi system that is the problem the diesel guy i deal with for parts siad the problem is where the parts where made in the first place.
its not just a certain model its every car with the delphi system fitted.

Biggest problem with the C5 is the electrics, which can go wrong in all kinds of infuriating ways. My petrol C5 once had its fuel pump replaced after it died spectacularly in the middle of birmingham. Except that it turned out there was nothing wrong with the pump, it was (probably) the terminals into the cpu having poor connections. I say probably because an auto electrician stripped everything out, cleaned it all and put it back together and it worked without him ever finding out exactly what had been wrong!

I wouldn't try running bio or veg on anything common rail personally. Stop being a tight wodge they get a respectable MPG.

I ran my 3.0 Hilux and I run my 2.8 Shogun on veg only because they struggle for 20+ mpg and if I payed at the pump it would cost me £140 a week. Its alot more effort than just going to the pumps.
