New boiler warranties

Bit of a boring one this. I'm going to need to replace my boiler in the next 6 months I reckon - can feel it in my bones .

I've been sold on the merits of getting a combi boiler, but am still a little reluctant and would feel more comfortable with a long warranty. Looking around, I've found warranties as long as 10 years for a new boiler from Ideal and others around the 5 year for Worcestor Boschs. Do they mean much in practice, or is just marketing?

We have a 10 year warranty on a couple of appliances, it was only for parts and you had to use 1 of their service engineers, whose call out fee was about £50.00. I thought that that was still not bad for a repair. We tried to get an appointment for someone to look at a washing machine, it would have been about 3 weeks away, so we ended up just buying a new one, purely because it was a quicker solution.

We had a new boiler fitted last year when we had our extension done - it came with a 10 year warranty but I haven't had to use it yet. I guess there will be some terms that you have to have it serviced every year etc (probably good idea anyway)

As an ex gas C/H boiler installer of 42 years my thoughts are-

I do like Worcesters, being easy to install, and mainly well thought out with the best back up by far but they are not cheap and do have more and more composite (plastic) parts involved. You do get a longer than standard warranty if you use a Worcester preferred installer and have a filter fitted.

Vaillant used to be good but they now seem to me to be overly complex to set up and also not cheap.

I have recently heard good things about Ideal boilers but will never forgive them due to their disastrous Icos and Isar range from a few years ago with lots of broken promises .

I went to Baxi heating yesterday for a tour of the depot and foundry and was very impressed with what I saw I used to rate Baxi as the best when cast iron boilers were the norm but they to went through a bad spell a few years ago but now seem to be over it. depending on the model chosen some of their boilers have a 10 year warranty and are roughly mid priced boilers.

Most / all warranty's require registering after installation, the benchmark book filling in and a yearly service being marked up in the book.

I personally wouldn't touch Biazi, Ravenheat, Vokara and Ferolli due to my experience and through talking to our maintenance lads.

If you can afford go for a reasonably powerful combi with a good water delivery rate as the 24KW ones are pretty poor for hot water out of the taps, if it's oversize for your radiators don't worry it will modulate down to suit.

Combi is more efficient, but if keeping the cylinder suits you then go for that

I like Bosch, not the cheapest but well made and easy to work on

All warranties are conditional on it being serviced every year

We went for a worchester bosch, installed by an approved installer and with their own filter in the system and their own control panel it gives you a 7 year warranty. What I read about and heard about from people with them before hand was they are really pretty good. Had it serviced not long ago and the guy was pretty decent. I would happily recommend them. Its a greenstar heatslave condensing combi (I think) we got, also chosen as it could be situated outside.

Oil or gas? I have a Worcester heat slave, probably around 12 years old & I have to say it's not been the most reliable machine and parts are expensive. However around Christmas time I found that the 'engineer' who I had used for years had left it leaking for years! rotting out the tank (this is the subject of another post!) So I suspect that some of faults over the years might not be the boilers fault......

I fitted a Worcester oil fired a few years back, as already said not the cheapest but do seem to have the best reputation. My father in law had his boiler replaced last year and went for a Baxi with a 7 year warranty and that's a combi. While he was on a British Gas service contract he always chatted to the engineer at the yearly check and without fail they all said Worcester is the way to go so I was surprised that the went for a Baxi but what he will save on the service contract in 7 years warranty almost paid for the boiler.

yea service every year so its gonna cost 500 quid to keep the warranty

we've got a Worcester boiler 24i.
had it for 20 years and only found out that's it only suitable for a 2 bedroom house and ours is 3.
still working OK but it getting a little tired now. it seem to empty 2 gallon of water before it gets warm.
on full flow its luke warm so by turn the tap down it does get hotter.
if I use the water upstairs getting wash and our lass is washing the dishes the water goes cold down stairs.
this pass 5 years things have started to go wrong ..new circuit board, pressure switch,fan,pressure relief valve.
losing a little water every other month but can't find a leak.easy fix jut top up.
just had quote for around 2 grand for green star CDI compact this inc fitting and magnaclean.
just waiting for a proper quote. not sure if this is a good price or not.
if I bought a Baxi that would save us £500 over the worcester.

We used to have ours done regularly anyway, so I see the warranty as a bonus.

mine is a ideal combi too got it on my mates recomendation, as said the new ideal combies have a good warenty too

I've just had my 16 year old worcester 24cdi changed,it was very reliable until the last year of service,when it sounded like it was trying to hop upstairs to meet me,,lol.
I had a veissman vitodens fitted,it was the preferred choice of the gas service man and i've spent the last 2 weeks turning it down,,,

I used the Ideal boilers warranty service on a job recently. (Heat exchanger leak)
The guy damn near rebuilt the boiler.
His logic was that if he replaced pretty much everything, then it will be fixed in one visit, plus any upcoming issues would be headed off at the pass.

Just had a baxi fitted 3 weeks ago, what a difference(7 year guarantee)
