Netto angle grinder broke :(

After around 5 years of abuse my £9.99 Netto angle grinder has broke. Still electrically sound but the spindle lock snapped so not possible to undo the nut and therefore it's gone in the bin.
Not bad for a cheap piece of Chinese rubbish which I expected to die within the warrantee period. I've got several angle grinders so have them set up for cutting, grinding, sanding and wire bush. The wire brush is on a Bosch that I paid £80+ for and has the same problem as the £9.99 Netto item with spindle lock button missing.
Just ordered a Makita as a replacement because no £9.99 grinders on offer at supermarkets at present
I bought a new Makita before and lent it to somebody who never returned it (nor can I remember who it was). I paid more before than the new one I've just bought ! Not often that something gets cheaper.

what and you couldn't bodge a new one into it or simply stick something in the hole when you needed to change the disc, that's terrible all that cash down the drain and you haven't had it 5 minutes

some of my angle grinders havent even got sp[indle lock whats wrong with holding the old disk with a leather glove and undoing it with the 2 pin tool

Paul if it's a variable-speed model and you're thinking of slinging it, I could really do with a speed controller coz I had to rob the one out of my grinder for another important project.

Unfortunately the spindle doesn't have any flats to allow a (it'd have to be very thin) spanner to fit. The disc in it was a 1mm that had broken up so not possible to grab it with gloves. It wasn't variable speed either. To be honest I wished I'd bought a couple as spares based on how good this has been. It got abused, kicked around the floor, dropped, etc yet amazingly took it all in it's stride. With my Bosch I have a length of steel rod (actually as broken screwdriver that I ground the end flat) that I jam into the lock button hole but with the Netto item something has broke inside so that didn't work.
I'd got a 9" Makita already so have been looking for an excuse to buy a 4.5" to replace the one lent out and not returned I was tempted by a 110V but 240v same price and saves lugging transformer about.
Next I think a cordless Makita angle grinder is on my wish list but can't think of a valid excuse to buy one - yet !

One of my B&D grinders broke the spindle lock, but had flats on the shaft so I ground a spanner down to fit it.

I had an old 4" grinder with the disc stuck and I put the pin spanner in and hit it with the hammer in the undoing direction a couple of times and it shocked it enough to start loosening. I gripped the back ferule that the disc rests on with snipe nose and undid it and then it just got nipped enough to hold it.

Some of my 4.5" and most of my 9" dont have spindle locks I might struggle now and again but just do it, I found the clutch nuts with the clips on them are very handy and make the job easier only supposed to be for 5" but work on 9" ok

Aldi are currently selling 1200 watt 115/125mm grinders for £19.99. Other than not locking the 'ON' button they seem quite good for the money. As they come with a 2 year warranty and a spare pair of brushes I would expect them to have a decent life span.

We have the Aldi one and it's great for the money. I like the soft start feature which you don't get on the cheapie ones, even though the price is similar.

According to HotDealsUK, SOME Tesco stores have the Black and Decker £30 angle grinder reduced to £8 - which is a total bargain. Not online or in all stores - still £30 in Tesco Extra in Stretford - but worth looking out for if you are going anyway.

I like the soft start feature

Ha thats the one thing I dont like about them I hate soft start, I dont like having to wait to do a quick touch grind and keep wanting to grind before its up to speed because it takes longer to get up to speed than to do the grind and curse every time!!,
I have disconnected it and put it dol on one. IMO still a good machine for the cost.

Needed a grinder today so hunted in the cupboard amongst all the power tools and found another Netto item. Looks like I bought a spare after all
The new Makita can be kept for best - when it arrives.
