Need to build a log horse / clamp for short logs

When we moved house over the summer the new place came with a large woodburner and a massive log pile. We've just had a second wood burner fitter which is much smaller and the existing logs are too long. Basically, I need to hold lots of 2' split logs so I can chainsaw them into 1' lengths. Any thoughts on what I can knock up that will make this process more efficient? Most stuff I've seen or used either has multiple support points or relies on the cantilever effect of a long log to stop things skipping around when I touch it with the saw chain.

Current solution is workmate which is OK but slow going.

I would close the workmate jaws and use one of my bessey clamps to hold the split log flat side down. This will just be temporary as in future you would cut correct lengths from the long lengths to start with.

Yep, future stuff will be cut to the right length but I've got about 10 tonnes of stuff to burn through first

A simple wooden V shaped trough clamped into the jaws of the wokmate would be ok.

A saw horse but scale it so it’s 2’ wide and has 4 supports. The middle two being at around about the 5” and 7” mark and cut between them so each half is supported by 2 sets.

Or buy a site saw - petrol driven circular table saw

I just cut mine on the ground holding the log with my left foot. Probably breaks every elf and safety regulation though.

That’s what everyone does!! Never met a tree surgeon who owns a saw horse. Hacking them up on the log pile is another favourite

Trouble is that small stuff tends to skip around a bit so definitely better if held / clamped in some way rather than just sitting in a V. I guess it's cheap to knock up something from a pallet and experiment though.

I made these a few years back and work well, you can have the DXF if you can find someone like @doubleboost to cut them out for you on a plasma

Get a pallet and put your logs between the slats, stand on log and cut.

Buy a Triton superjaws and some log jaws to go in it. You can use it for lots of other jobs as well same as the Workmate or just cut on the pile same as suggested.

Still not worth it.

Far more risk of having an accident cutting small bits into smaller bits.

Keep the big ones for the big stove.

Your going to need them anyway.

How thick are we talking hear? Out log splitter will “cut” anything 4-6 inch across the grain, make real short work of fence posts!
