need suggestions for eye protection when using grinder

I use the grinder a lot. All the time.

I always wear normal safety glasses but these do leave the occasional spark hit my eyeballs, regularly.

my girlfriend bought me a face shield for christmas, but it was blurry and fogged up easily.

I'm thinking something this shape might be the way to go, is there a particularly good version of these available, or has anyone other suggestions?

Will these get fogged up easiy? - Its really a pet peeve of mine.
I dont mind paying extra for something that will work well.


I like seeing lol, and dont want to lose sight in either eye.

Yes i have a pair of those goggles in the second pic down and they fog up on me. I use a clear plastic visor for eye protection when using a big grinder.

the only other suggestion is what the wood workers use a full mask that has blown air pumped into it or a full face visor

i have all 3 too many warnings to wear the goggles and i am doing now but i also have to have a mouth mask as well causes nothing but steam ups

ive found grinding has started to affect my chest

I'm using glasses so full face visor for me. Also, adjusted properly, the deflector shield that came with the grinder will deflect most sparks away from my face.

Maybe you can pair the face shield with good half mask to help with fogging issue?

I wear prescription safety glasses which arn't actually safe to use with a grinder so I use a full face shield as well, has the advantage of protecting the rest of your face too.

I use these Bolle ones from Cromwell Tools. They don't mist up but somehow you tend to get a dirty face when taking them on and off!

The glasses and goggles above are classed as LEP (Light eye protection). They don't have the correct impact rating i.e will break if something hits them.
These are the ones we use.

Can't remember the BS number but a lot of the cheaper ones are not right for the job. Cheaper ones are better than nothing of course, but I've been in numerous courses over the years looking at photos of cheap glasses split in half and a bloke with no eye telling the story.

With Paul here, use very similar ones. Uvex ultravision I think the ones we use are.
Don't tend to mist up, I wear prescription glasses under mine.

They are all the same type of goggles - just have different colour seals...Ours are Reca which have green seals, Uvex are orange, and Hilti are red.

They are maybe 10-15 quid a pair, but last a good long time.

When I worked I had to occasionally use self contained breathing apparatus which had a tendency to fog. The guys who maintained the gear found some stuff to spray on the inside of the visor to prevent it. Just had a quick search on the net & they sell something similar for motorbike helmet visors, wonder if that would help?

usually I wear light type glasses with a visor over. I have worn the full on goggles on some jobs, though I tend to wreck them y getting the lenses scratched up or putting them down then getting them covered in hot weld spatter or the likes.

grinding sparks have a knack of winding the tiniest gap and turning right angles to find your eye! All totally impossible of course but it still happens.

Grinder guard fitted correctly for application and position yourself so the main sparks go in a safe direction, regardless of PPE

also wear a mask to protect your lungs from the metal and disc dust

Another vote for uvex ultra (orange seal), had no problems with misting and can be worn with 3M half masks

Uvex ( I think that's the spelling) make some good eye protective gear as well as other PPE.

Here's one I made earlier.

Just an old motorcycle visor and a cheapo (chinese welding) helmet head band. I was doing a lot of welding under the van and needed something that would work close to the face. It really works well! So well in fact you can easily forget you're wearing it and I would constantly have to double check it was actually in place.

Just to confirm, I would wear a full welding helmet during the actual welding! This mask was for the grinding and prep which is bloody horrible under a rusty van where everything just wants to fall into your eyes.

Bolle, UVEX, or 3M all make the wrap around glasses that are much better. I tend to find myself using my Bolle standard specs most of the time.

A lot of places won't accept safety glasses for grinding, and insist on enclosed goggles.

I've never got on with face shields, they always seem to steam up for me, or stuff sneaks round the sides.

Its the Uvex Ultrasonic (not ultravision) ones we use, same type as in Paul's picture above these days.
Ultravision, I have used them in the past, an enclosed goggle type, but with an additional optional face shield too.


Using a proper lense cleaner will make quite a difference to them misting up when you clean them.

Off topic a trifle, Just before I retired I was supplied with a pair of uvex safety boots, with out a doubt the most comfortable boots I have ever worn..( The standard cripplers aren't a patch on them).
