Need some help with car floor welding in Dunfermline / Edinburgh

Hi, relatively new to this forum and learning to MIG weld. Got my first MIG welder and practicing away, slowly getting better. Also about to start a night school course in the next couple of months.

Problem is ... my MOT is due in two months and I need a very small rust hole in my floor welded up. The hole is about 50p sized and is near the driver side sill.

I don't feel confident enough to do it myself yet. Garage quoted me £150 for the work, but the guy's welding is pretty bad, seen it on other car's before.

Is there anyone in Dunfermline / Fife / Edinburgh area that would either be interested in this job (going rate will be paid!) or could you reccomend someone in this area?

It's my pride and joy and would rather an experienced welder carried out the work.

Hi,

go for it...it's not that hard.

And floor welding is even easier as it's downhand.

Basically get the seat and carpet out, clean up the metal with a flap-disk, or emery if you have to, so that it's clean for about an inch all around the hole.

Cut your new piece of metal about 1/4" (6mm) wider all around and tack it in place with four spots. Then run a bead between the spots.

As with all these things, practice before-hand and you'll get it right.

You'll probably buy a 3' x 2' steel sheet from the local car parts suppliers so you'll have plenty of metal to play with.

The only danger is that small holes tend to spread a bit when you clean the carp off but a bigger hole is not much different to a small one!

Post some pictures of the hole and some test welds on practice sheets and I'm sure we'll get you through it.
