The third post is from a very respected member of the electrical forum, "westie101", who works for one of the DNOs (electricity supply companies), and he's saying that we all need permission from our DNO to run a welder. The conditions from the DNO he cites (they all have similar) suggests that 5kva (around a 170A welder for us) is this maximum that would be allowed on a single phase supply, and that anything above that needs to be 3-phase. But any and all need permission.
It also states that an assessment will be made when you apply to run a welder, and they may refuse you permission outright, or insist on thousands of pounds of work to "require a supply delivered to the premises at high voltage and are the subject of special negotiations with us for each individual case"
I have never heard that you need to apply for permission from the electricity company to run a welder before and, checking my own DNO, it seems that it's the case for them, too.
Has anyone else heard of this, fallen foul of it, been granted permission, refused permission, etc?
