Hello Jaeger,
I see no problem with running two smaller motors, providing a staggered start and being able to unload the compressor at start? After all, that is essentially what larger refrigeration compressors have with double windings.

Oh come on!
We could have four page thread for the first potential motor.
At least another four for a second matching motor.
Then as for the clutches, unloader, starting relays etc....
We could be here a while!

If you have a 3.7Kw inverter would it be OK to run say a 4Kw motor?
3.7Kw = 4.9597855228HP (so 5hp)
5hp=3.73Kw (I'd guess that would be rated as 4Kw?)
But 4Kw=5.3619302949Hp
It's just that some rate hp and others rate Kw?

a difficult question to answer with certainty, as it depends on how much of your 5HP is actually needed. If the inverter operates within it's capacity then OK, but if say it's running at 110% capacity it will eventually trip.
The load on the compressor motor also depends on the duty cycle so if it is idle for a reasonable time then run for a while I would say probably it will work? There are a couple of variables which you can probably decide yourself, i.e. how much work aqnd for how long will it be used?

If it was a single phase 5HP motor (that's what it used to have on it) where do you go from there?
But as it's phase changed thought it better if it was over rated it would help, but then there's the amperage required for a larger inverter?

I have a 2.2kw inverter to run my 3hp lathe and also run the coolant pump off the same inverter. No problems yet so there probably is enough reserve capacity in these things. Although I've not really been turning any large heavy objects to strain it.
Think if you tried it and found a problem, it'd just be a case of tweaking the pressure cut-out switch down a bit. I assume you will have a reciever to be filled. The most strain on the motor will be at highest pressure in the reciever.

You can run a bit larger motor that the inverter is rated if you don't fully load it.
I picked up a 1/2HP (0.4kw) inverter from fleabay. I found a 1HP motor for almost nothing. As the lathe normally uses a 1/3-1/2HP motor, I figured it would work.
It basically worked but I got about 1/4 HP out of it on the higher speeds. The no-load current for the 1HP motor was near 1/4 HP. So I only got 1/4HP of work out of it. When running the lathe on larger stock, I found I could only do 300-seconds before the inverter would trip due to over current. I replaced it with a 1/2HP motor and it was fine.
On the compressor, you can select the appropriate pulleys so it only draws as much power as you have available.
