Need help on a school project

Hi guys, I;m new to this forum and to welding all together.

At school i am making two chairs, metal frame with wooden slats for the seating area and backing, and also a small stool type table which will have a metal frame with wooden slats for the top.

The school has a Mig Welder and i did abit of practice on it today with some scrap metal. The metal i will be using is 25x25mm metal which is in a square tube.


I've watched a few Mig welding videos on youtube and everyone is saying pull or push. Which one do you guys think would join it better and do i have to make the edges of whereever i join something into a V shape with the grinder so the welding sits in there?

Your help would be much appreciated, please don't get too technical or if you do explain it because i don't know too much about welding yet.

Push gives better gas coverage and is easier to see where you are going.

The Mig welder doesn't have gas i don't think. Its just got the earth clamp you put on the metal and thats it. Thats what the teacher said so he said its abit more messy than if it had gas because gas keeps oxygen away from it or something but it would be too expensive.

You will need to post up the make/model of the welder.

It may be one that uses flux cored wire (gasless) or it may be a multipurpose machine.

some folks on here can instruct you on how to set it up once they know what machine it is

a pic of the front panel and the power specification label would be the best way.

Since for my project I've planned on having a metal frame with wooden slats, what do yu guys suggest is the best way to join the slats to the metal frame. I was thinking of making small tabs and welding them on the metal frame, drilling a hole into the tabs and putting screws straight in to attach the wood. I'd do it on the back and underside of the backing and seating area so its not visible and i think this would look neat.

Any suggestions on any other methods you've used or tips on how to do what I'm doing so its neater or anything?

You will need to use gas with that machine if you want to weld anything.

there is plenty of advice on the subject if you search the forum.

the fact theres a lead coming from inside the welder to plug in either possitive or negative would suggest its gas/gasless, when your not using gas that wire needs to be in negative and the earth in possitive, if your school stops being tight fisted and gets gas then you want it the other way round
