Need help MIG welding first time

Glad you got a photo of that MAGNAFLOW muffler because it isn't going to look like that for long if you attack it with that #$%^ box welder. For them to advertise that it will weld up to 1/2" is like someone selling you a standard Reliant Robin and telling you it will lap the Nurburgring in under 7 minutes. For what it's worth, pay someone to weld the muffler and use your welder for hobby jobs. (I wouldn't make a set of car ramps with it though)


Can't understand why you would want to weld a Stainless muffler with mild steel wire either. I have been selling welding machines for 30 years and sometimes, although I would like to sell a customer a machine, when they show me the job they want to do with it, I advise them to get someone experienced to do it. Yours is one of those cases.

Probably not what you were wanting to hear but the last thing you'd want to do is to make a mess of that muffler so for what it would cost you to get it welded on by someone with more experience and better kit I honestly think it would be money well spent.

60 amp minimum means its only use is as a door stop, either buy quality kit, or get someone with quality kit to do the work, because its cheaper to pay for it to be done once, then have someone try to fix the mess that it will become

It's pretty thick but most mufflers are made out of more then one layer I suppose?

I noticed the hardest part was getting the hangers welded on the body is polished stainless steel but it was not laying down a good bead..

I let the wire speed at about 1 because I did not want to burn a hole but it must be very thick because I decided to give a go at the hangers for a good 5 seconds and still no hole.

I had to put a reducer on and to my surprise I had no leaks It was hard to lay this part down because the metal is thin in this area but it's doable.

well it's on it's not pretty how long it stops on is another point well you tried
thats more than some people would have done but if you had done a bit more research you might have ended up with a bit better welder that was more useful than the one you have the hard part is the learning curve all the best have fun
