I once used a small Tig welder made by Eutectic that had a lift start system.
You touched the tungsten and then operated the torch switch and a tiny current flowed.
When you lifted off and broke the circuit the welding current ramped in.
Lift your finger off the switch and the welding current stopped.
I've always thought that scratch start was a term used when low price stick inverters are
fitted with a tig torch with no switch, just a valve to turn the gas on.
I could be wrong (and frequently am.
)
