THANKS EDDIE WILL TAKE MY BROTHER INLAW AS HE'S A ELECTRICIAN WILL LETYOU KNOW RESULTWhen you say that the MIG will "cut 1/8" plate", does that mean it is burning through, rather than laying a bead? If so, at what position(s) of the rotary "power" switch does that happen?
Burning through can mean that the DC output voltage is too high. To check the voltage output: turn the gas off, slacken the pressure roller, connect the negative of a DC voltmeter to the workpiece clamp and the positive to the tip of the MIG torch. Set the machine at the lowest power range - position 1 of the rotary switch, then press the torch trigger. The meter should read about 15v DC. Go up to the next range, and repeat. You should see the voltage rise steadily as you step through the power settings, going from about 15v to maybe 30v at the top setting. Let us know what the results are.
