need advice on my stop starts

hey everyone... i was just wondering if anyone cound possibly give me any techniques on doing stop starts... because i have a certification test on tuesday which requires me to do a stop start on a 90 degree angle and one on a bevel edge, then we have to bend it to see if the weld holds up. now ive been practicing for a while now and everything that i do the weld always seems to crack on the stop start????? any suggestions?

when you stop welding remover the torch as quickly as poss to leave a a deep crater then when you start, start a mm away from where you stopped then drag the arc back over to the crater then forwards again, you gota be propa quick tho.

I was going to say that! Your supposed to feather out the end of the previous weld so when you restart the weld will form a proper tie in. Pipewelders trick - also done where the pipes have been tacked together.

Hi everyone. I'm a bit late on joining the thread I know.. But are we actually allowed to feather the end of the weld for a coded weld test? A mate of mine says we're not.. I have a test at the end of this month..

I had to grind back on the 1st pass just past the chalk mark they put down then start roughly where the grind finished fillet weld 10mm mig on the first run only then weld 2nd pass all along no stopping then weld third pass all along no stopping

Just what the heck is " wrong" about grinding back were you plan a start stop?

It's a technique you should learn first.there will be a day when there is no grinder there or you're not allowed use them.it also means on a pipe with 50 or 60 rods needed to fill,you are quicker considerably by not having to lift your lense and drop your torch every restart.
