Hi all I'm new on here.. I'm thinking of buying a welder I already have a crypton triangle Minx 180amp. But I'm looking at a crytigan bantam oil cooled welder are they a good make or am I better off buying an inverter welder. If so what's the best inverter. Thank you
Hi, this is from the archives of Commercial Motor Magazine in 1965.
CYTRINGAN ELECTRIC WELDER CO. Cambridge Works, Kettering, Northants.
THE range of arc-welding plant offered by this company covers the requirements of all types of vehicle workshop. The smallest is the Miner, which is suitable for an a.c. mains input of from 100 to 250 V and provides a current range from 20 to 110 amp, in 15 settings at 50 V, or 20 to 70 amp. at 80 V. The transformer in the Minor is immersed in oil for cooling and the welder weighs 122 lb. The Minor model is available also as a combined welder and
battery booster/charger, in which case there is an additional terminal connection that can supply a charging current of up to 30 amp. or a trickle charge of 1 to 2 amp.
Giving a higher output and available also with the battery booster/charger feature is the Bantam 180 amp. welder. This is of a similar size to the Minor and gives a range of current settings from 25 to 180.
I've got a Cytringan oil cooled myself, 200 amps from 240 Volts single phase but it will trip a normal 13 amp household supply at it's upper settings.
Bought second hand in 1991, it was already about thirty or so years old and up to about 18 months ago, worked everyday of its life.
No evidence of water in the oil, although curiously it was much lighter then, as I used to be able to move it about on my own but much like my anvils, pillar drills, etc., with the passage of time, they've become much heavier and lifting it now takes two of us. It's on wheels, looks a bit shabby but I wouldn't part with it.
Whatever else you do, if the Bantam's a good price buy it, I doubt it'll ever let you down.
I believe there was a thread on the Cytringan Minor back in 2008.
All the best with your welding.
