Need a trailer - Piano to move

So I need to move an upright Piano to my sister in Law's house in Sale, not far away but I no longer have access to trucks etc. No longer even have a towbar, and getting one fitted will cost a few hundred.

The piano cost 10 quid when we bought it, it's a 1927 elysian and pretty good, can't bring myself to smash it up and burn the wood. SIL would like it for her boys to play. My Mate has a tow bar on his car, so all I need is a suitable trailer. My Dad has a box trailer that I used to use when I had a tow bar, but I would have to cut the back off it to even pretend to load a piano. I need a plant trailer somewhere in the NW of England that doesn't need to be paid for hire. It's a 10 minute journey. Tried putting it on Shiply but the quotes were ridiculous.

Anyone got a trailer I can borrow? Ideal thing would be a truck with a tail lift I guess, but they aren't cheap to hire...

Have you tried a piano specialist? The guy who tunes mine moved it about 8 miles for £50.

I read that as "We" bought it in 1927 then started to work out how old you were then

Renting or borrowing a trailer makes more sense, a lot of time consuming fannying around moving things like piano`s. Dont Top gear still buy piano`s for and on behalf of the Morris Marinas owners club?

We had a box piano to move for my sister and (there was other stuff too) but used a Luton Van with tail lift. For a four day hire was £100 and felt it a far better solution than using a trailer to move it a few hundred miles.

All valid points but there is no budget here! Looked at a tail lift luton and that was 90 quid for half a day!

As mentioned, I would imagine it would require tuning after being moved. It's entirely possible to DIY tune it but you would need a very good ear to do it without any equipment.

I mention this in support of the mover / tuner option, however I do realise the lack of budget.

I worry that, without tuning, you may be wasting your time trying to move it.

Again it's just a comment. I have read the requirement for not spending cash.

If my life depended on it, I guess I'd get a solid board under the job, two scaffold planks to leap-frog along the ground, and, if it really is only 10 mins drive, spend all day doing it by hand.


Or spend half the day earning enough money to pay someone else to do it.


My suspicion is that your sister in law wants it, but does not want it enough to pay for movement, right?

I had to move an upright piano while the house was being renovated. It was put on moving trolley and pushed the 1/4 mile along the road, no pavements, single track.

My first question would be to the kids, do they want to play the piano? If yes I’d move it. If any doubt or a no, I’d cut the piano up or advertise it and the buyer can move it. Awful things to move about

my nephew bought one for his mam (my sister)

we moved it with a van no problem, out though their house down the drive and lifted it into the van, then out the van up some steps into her house

just brute forced it, nothing fancy


if you can get it ready, someone with a van could move it pretty quick if you were there to load/unload it and do the faffing about in/out of houses?

- What if you get a puncture, would you pay for a repair or for a new tyre?
- Or what if you bust a reflector or light?
- Or what if the trailer gets nicked while in your care?
Is fixing any loss / damage caused answered by a nope -no money?
Or can you suddenly find £50 to cover it?
Mates borrowing kit easily can be regretted by the Lender, as we've heard many times on here... Should be a Rule against it ...

If SiL wants it bad enough, just tell her she can have it if she comes to get it.
And just admit you have no way of getting it to her, and no money to pay for it to be moved.

Why make it Your problem?

If you want it gone, that's a separate issue - give SiL a deadline, so she knows after that date it will be advertised...
