Need a new printer that will take cheap aftermarket ink

Well my old printer has just given after about 8 years so need to find a new one quick.

Can anyone recommend one that is a printer/scanner and is cheap and uses cheap ink, I don't need great picture quality as most of the print is text.

I've given up on cheap ink after having 3 Epson's fail due to clogged print heads. I now have a Kodak scanner / photo printer for colour which I only use genuine inks and for bulk of printing use a Brother mono laser which happily uses cheapest eBay toner.

always used cheap ink via an epson printer since 2001

as i use a continuous ink system so all i buy is just the ink for it and print off once a week to stop the printer drying up when not in use however ive heavily used my printers for years only in last 5 that i havent done

I would buy the same printer again if I could but its no longer available epson RX-425.

I've read articles that show which printers are cheapest on ink, I think it was Kodak that came out tops.

Personally I stopped using generic ones too as they just aren't as good, I just buy multi packs of originals online.

If you are printing a lot for text and don't need colour then I would get a cheap laser printer.

i got an ink refill kit from tesco, only a couple of quid, the ink supplied kept me going for a couple of years then i bought a new kit when the ink ran out, i am probably on my 3rd printer now since i started re-filling, bit messy to fill but no probs at all with the print quality

as ive stored it in the loft area i prefer the cd printers but do have a scanner printer

I’ve never had anything other than an Epson and have only ever bought the cheapest ink I can find.

Buy a secondhand laser off ebay for 50 quid and when it finally gives up the ghost get another, I have both a mono HP laserjet 2100 and a colour HP laserjet cp1515 printer, they are both network printers so it's easy for anyone in my house to use.

I've been given another HP mono and it's the duplex version but it came from a house of a smoker and it stinks that bad it's sulking in the garage hoping the smell will wear off. If you were nearer and didn't mind the smell you could have if for free.

I have three HP2100's in different buildings around the farm - all networked. Not the quickest but the spares are easily available and the toner is cheap and they are easily adequate for my needs. HP of that era was good solid kit

Smartphone for a scanner/printer is a bit of a chocolate tea pot.

10 documents auto feed and print or to pdf in perfect quality a smartphone isn't really competing.

Same as if you have a load of printing to do a printer combo isn't much cop compared to a photocopier.

you know those kits where you have ink tanks outside the printer and they're connected to the printer head with little pipes ?

the L355 comes with those direct from Epson

printer is a bit more expensive, but mines been working perfectly for years... and I only stick cheap ebay in it

often print out posters/price lists/flyers etc. for work, it churns through they all day and has never missed a beat, sometimes hundreds of pages a day

Well it works fine for me on the 3 or 4 documents i need to scan a year

Used cheapo ink in my Epsom printers and it was ok. Changed to a canon printer / scanner, it doesn’t like anything but original ink. If you shop about you can get original inks pretty cheap.

One advantage with laser printers that is often forgotten is the print doesn't smudge or run if you get the paper wet, I sometimes print pages out of manuals for reference when working on a car but a inkjet print often ends up a mess when you get brake fluid or coolant on it where as a laser print is fine, it also doesn't fade, I've got 10 year old prints in the toolbox in my garage that are fine.

I used to have an Epson and spent more on ink cleaning the jets out than printing with it. Finally threw it away and bought a cheap second hand laser printer (Kyocera 680) the wiper finally gave up the ghost, never bought a new toner. Now I have a cheap(est) Samsung mono laser. Don't bother to use the flatbed scanner anymore, just take a photo with the camera if I want to copy anything and print that.

If you are not bothered about photos then personally I would go for a laser, no dried out print heads and if you pick one that compatible toners area available for they are cheap to run. printerland.co.uk has some great deals including cashbacks on HP - I have not connection with them but have purchased a couple of HP M477fnw printers from them (one for me one for my parents) prints in colour, scans copies etc and with the cashback £160 delivered which I am stunned at (I bought mine about 2 years ago and my parents 6 months ago so sadly paid more but am still happy with them)

I know it's not much good to OP because he needs a scanner too

but if you're looking for a black and white laser printer you can;t go wrong with a 'Canon i-SENSYS LBP6030B'

I have two, bought them before the above epson and it's a cracking printer for the price, £60ish doesn't get you much for a name brand laser printer

the one at work just sits as a backup but at home it's the only printer I have... I'm a bit of a geek so pretty used to paying over the odds for a tiny tiny improvement... but I'd deffo buy the same again if I needed another laser printer
