Need a few ideas to attach rope handles.

cables are smooth where as the rope as undulations so the rubber will conform to the rope

But rope is also lots of little fibres that will stick to rubber and snap if pulled on. The thickness is not likely to give much of a size increase to stop it being spilled through

if you was pulling the rope thru the hole of the planter in a straight line there would be more chance of it pulling off but seeing as it exits the planter at 90 degress straight up there will be resistance on the rope there by lessening any force to the shrink end. I think there is a good chance it will work

if all else fails stay with the dowel thru the rope and attach a jubilee clip to the end of the rope, I still like the shrink end idea tho

On cables they tend to pull off easy there just to keep the water out while pulling in or storage. Not sure how much of a bite they would get on rope

The self-adhesive heat shrinks are water proof and near impossible to remove from cable, are the caps available in a similar material?

Google a crown knot,this where the three strands are tucked under each other and pulled tight.it is the first formation of a back splice,simple and will do the job,if the knot is repeated around therope it is called a wall knot ,easy peasy knot ,google it,advicer from experience ,

if you do a tidy splice on the outside that could form the actual handle with it being thicker? the only trouble would be rolling the splice together after the splice if the join is on the inside you could just do asemi splice or how about laying the rope alongside each other for 150mm and then use cable ties to hold the rope together if you put a row of them it would easily be strong enough

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm going to try a crown knot first as its supposed to be easy and requires no monies.

If making a few of them, why not get a kg of polyester resin and cast an end by putting last bit of the rope in a plastic cap, then pour the resin in. Wait an hour, remove cap. Never come off.
