What are ? injectors, pump, fuel rail cracked , fuel rail pressure sensor, valves, tappet clearance, pistons, rings, air in fuel, starter, battery, earth, engine oil viscosity, ambient temp, and a Myriad of others all of those can be helped with a 'sniff'They won't start cos their knackered Norm!
My remark was meant "tongue in cheek" NormWhat are ? injectors, pump, fuel rail cracked , fuel rail pressure sensor, valves, tappet clearance, pistons, rings, air in fuel, starter, battery, earth, engine oil viscosity, ambient temp, and a Myriad of others all of those can be helped with a 'sniff'
so saying their knackered, is like saying a computer wont boot, because ???????????![]()
many engines are fitted with it as standard for extreme conditions, it is not as bad as people make out used properly. It does also have its place in diagnosis etc
And all this stupid talk about diesels 'getting addicted' to it makes me laugh. What a load of tosh.
There is a reason THEY WONT START------ IT JUST NEEDS FINDING !
The jcb 3c with the leyland 4/98 came factory with a ether injection cold start mechanism, ie easystart but not in a can.
If you have it still, you might see a small pod on the left hand face of the dash, and a plunger in the dash proper, the pod is a resivior for ether, and the plunger measured a shot to get the old girl fired up in cold mornings. Theyre all knackered by now anyway though, along with the dunny pump for fuel transfer. My pump is still there, but the bellows and valves dry rotted years ago so its ornamental too.
I start mine with a sniff of easystart out a aerosol, but thats because I already know its knackered and why. Otherwise it will start dead cold but it takes a age and chuffs white smoke for a bit building up enough heat to diesel properly and catch so a quick whiff is kinder on the starter and stuff.

Love it.7.3 Powerstroke, Cummins or some other v8 diesel with the fuelling turned and roll coal through London....watch Client Earth go into meltdown along with the anti pollution meters...
Sounds similar to how mine looked inside when I lifted the head.piccy is of same model / diffrent machene it's one a mate had couple of yrs ago ( nd its tidyer ) but with all same symptoms but is about how knackerd this one is, that engine clatterd about 2 clock hours later we later re engined that one
In my experience it is not the ether that's the problem, it is the thing attached to the operating side of the thumb using it, that is the problem!
I usually crank the engine and give tiny pulses and you start to hear it pick up speed a little, then increase pulse amounts if needed, till it can cope without.
