hatefull old JCB wouldn't go for me today, after about half an hour banging head against wall useing the start charger, i realised i was being very very dull.

when the hell am i running the engine drive set to run a 200 amp start charger of the ancillary output ........ when the welder has a constant voltage setting and best part of 600 amps.

set to 15 volts, connect welding leads to battery and flick the switch. sounds like it about to start but not quite so turn the dial a bit more and a bit more and a bit more.

probaly reallys shouldn't do that but was quite inpressed by how brutaly effective it was, also drew my attention to a sub optimal connection on the battery isolator

the battery was gassing rather a lot , starter motor got a bit hot and the wires hotter.

think the old chug chug under the bonnet might be at the end of its chugging days, its not been in the best of health for a long time but getting to the point it'd be quicker to dig with a shovel than get it fired up. but dont fancy my chanes of finding a layland engine thats any good

You can get a 4/98 engine rebuild kit for about 500 quid, liners pistons gaskets etc if its the motor itself and the rest of the machine warrents it. My followers were ruined too, but I hard faced them and made up a rig to grind the feet back to profile and its been ok since.
If its the pump, I rebuilt my diesel pump on mine myself, but I started with two poorly ones and my main driver was the fact it had injested loads of crud because of empty filter housings on arrival "newly serviced" and stopped injecting. Classic machinery net has the pump service manual for download irrc. I've got the paper manual for the 3ciii if you have the same skid but it doesn't cover the engine much.
Mine smokes like a chimney and once its ran for the first time that day its fine, though really cold starts involve easy start as it needs the rings/liners etc kit desperately when funds permit as its down on compression and has masses of blow by.

When I had it apart last, there were ridges on the bores and the rings had gone slack, but I was skint, so I filed off the ridges to stop it breaking the top rings and screwed it back together "for a few months to use it while I save up"... and years later... its still like this

Mrfluffy the inectors and pump are good i had that lot apart last year after an issue with water and crud in the tank. it's now makeing about the same amount of smoke as gandelf when ideling but chucks some serious amounts of black out when working as the injection pump is turned right up. that came about after the main hydralic pump gave up ( pto shaft to pump broke, must have tweeked the pump as shortly after with repaired shaft the pump ate itself ) had a new surplus iron cased pump but with slightly larger displacement i didn't think that would matter much,
tired engine driveing a bigger pump that didnt leack by, it'd just stall the engine rather than blow the relief valves, few turns on the fuel screws fixed that. for an old machene hell it'll dig, push and peck some. really it probaly needs to go to a new home where someone will give it some love rather than bodge and thrash it

In the distant past as a poor apprentice that couldn't afford a new battery for my XK120, For the first start of the day in the winter I connected an extra 6v battery in series with the duff 12v, Engine used to spin over a treat,

sounds like a job for sniff of easi start to me !

another way to do it is to disconnect the link from the pre engage solenoid to main starter and put that through another battery so just the starter sees 24v thats how the escort bda's had to be started it is actually less strain on the starter and spins the engine a lot faster to make up for lack of compression.
Also could be in need of oil change but go for o w 30 or some such thinner oil ----expensive but not as expensive as a rebuild.

easy start is banned here ! to meany sensitive littel NA 3 cylinders that arnt actualy knackerd. also had allready gone a notch or three past easi start in the nasty tricks to start knackerd diesels, it'd allready had the intake pipe taken off and a flameing deisel soaked rag held by it. this is one of them engines that dosent get oil changes it gets a periodic filter and large regular top ups

Works a treat - I had a Perkins 4236 in a Range Rover and the 12v starting system was very hard put to start from cold.

some deutz engines have that from the factory, they have a contactor box that when you turn the key connects the 2nd battery in series with the primary battery to power the starter motor, then when the starter is disengaged it put it in parralel to recharge it allong with the main battery. hence the v8's start better than 4 &5 cyl motors

My Land Cruiser had a 24v starting as standard, All other electrics were 12v, Had it for 10 years and never heard the engine turning regardless of the weather, Soon as you touched the key the engine was running,No heater delay at all.

Actually it'd be worth the £24 charge to drive into London with that exhaust smoke, if you're going to pay to pollute London you might as well bring in the most polluting thing you can drive

many engines are fitted with it as standard for extreme conditions, it is not as bad as people make out used properly. It does also have its place in diagnosis etc
And all this stupid talk about diesels 'getting addicted' to it makes me laugh. What a load of tosh.
There is a reason THEY WONT START------ IT JUST NEEDS FINDING !
