Nato towing hitch MOD

hi all, ive got a MOD arrows trailer coming sunday, but need a nato towing hitch. do you think i could make something that would recieve the nato ring hitch? any ideas would be great. cheers

You only need a NATO hitch if you intend doing extreme off roading with the trailer, the hitch rotates.
For road use just go for a jaw & pin type hitch

Or you should be able to swap the coupling on the trailer to a "normal" one

You still need some rotation, this can be provided by the ring being a loose fit on the pin or the ring itself rotates. The former could give rise to shock loads.

I doubt very much whether the Towsure jaws have enough clearance round the back to take a NATO ring.

I managed to recover three sankey trailers at once without a NATO hitch.

Should add that the NATO ring is far too large to fit any standard Tow hitch. Wouldn't be impossible to build your own simple pin hitch large to accomadate one temporarily. However if your going to be towing an arrows trailer around on a regular basis you might as well get the correct hitch. Witham's will sell them reasonably cheap I suspect. Is that were you sourced the trailer?

Hope you've got something big to tow it with. They're usually paired with Bedford MJ's or similar I believe.

Allthough I tow an ifor williams trailer myself with a ring & hitch coupling on my estate car,I was ''advised'' by the towbar fitter that it's illegal on a car, to use a pin hitch, they are for commercial type vehicles/landrovers etc, it's not against the law to have a pin/50mm ball type fitted to your car but you have to use the 50mm ball part. I'll take my chance at being pulled up!!

Right then your all wrong, the nato ring will not fit into a standard pin hitch and if it did the mod trailer would not steer properly. Also if the hitch on the trailer does not rotate round 360deg then the one on the car has to and vice versa (1 nato hitch caters for both varients) as if there both fixed and the trailer rolls over theres a serious risk that the towing motor will follow suit. Remember its illegal to not have the appropriate towbar for towing and so would affect your insurance if you had a accident. So i think you might have to bite the bullet and spend 80 odd quid buying one. Remember you will also have to redrill your towbar as they are four bolt fixing and have different spacing to standard. And no i havent got one for sale allthough if your local to Bristol i might have one you can borrow.

Make an adaptor plate to bolt them together, 2 holes to 4.

Thanks guys, i reckon that a disco wont tow a arrows trailer as its too high. ill be going with a sankey with some mods to my disco. didnt know these arrows trailers were so damn high.

They are basically a lorry trailer. In my day they were towed behind the 4 tonners (thats 4 tonne payload).

And very heavy. Most of your usable towing weight even behind a Disco is gone before you add the payload.

Even the Sankey 3/4 tonne trailers are a heavy thing. Seem to remember about 620kg for a 750kg payload. They are well built, intended for off-road use, so will stand a large overload beyond the 750kg, just don't get caught on the road by VOSA or the police.

There are far more efficient trailers for payload to weight ratio. Sankey 3/4 tonners are cheap though. I picked up those three for less than £100 each from Witham's auction a few years back.

I have a trailer with a standard Nato ring (which is free to rotate). There are ball and pin couplings available with sufficient clearance (I have one on the 90), but all those I have seen are only rated to 2 tonnes. I got mine from Brooklyns near Southampton before they sold out, but any landrover / military vehicle dealer should be able to sort you out. I don't remember the make, but mine was orange if that helps Been using it on and off for well over 10 years with no problems - it does clonk around with no load on it though.
