The Rya are interested in one thing only & that is winning medals at the olympics. My wife & i have been heavily involved & still are with our local yacht club, its run totally by volunteers (she is secretary) The Rya are sadly absent from most grass roots clubs unless it is to heap beaurocracy upon them.
The most highly qualified sailor i ever knew was a lovely bloke, sailing instructor, senior sailing instructor, yachtmaster offshore & ocean, powerboat 1,2,3 & instrucrtor etc. Hugely qualified.
Yet put him in any boat & he was totally clueless, i mean to the point of being dangerous, honestly disaster followed him closer than Jonah himself.
We helped run our clubs cadet week for nearly 30 years & it has succeded despite the Rya not because of them.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I know a similar example, not ticked quite so many boxes, but all theory, no clue.

Having said that I also knew 3 of a crew of 4 Master Mariners, who put a yacht up the beach heading in to a port that wasn't the one they thought it was. Fortunately the tide came in and they worked out their error as they sobered up.

About being where you think you are...Long time ago, I was bringing a boat up from Sardinia to St Tropez. No nav aids, just a school atlas. compass and trailing log for distance. So, dead reckoning. Very early morning, still dark and my crew bangs on the hatch and says he can hear surf.. Well, that catches ones attention! Listened to it, thinking I can't have got it that wrong. Then realised it was whales. Dawn came up and we were in a large pod of them, maybe 30 plus. Bigger than us and some came very close, like 20 ft. When they surfaced and blew and were upwind, their breath did pong a bit.
The winds were very light and the engine was duff, as it had been sunk. So we were 5 days out of sight of land. Quite pleased with my nav, when in the early morning mist I saw a lump ahead. Yep it was the island south of St Trop.

Actually it was Cap Camarat, not an island, but the point I had aimed at..
We arrived in the bay of St. T around 11. 00. All of sudden, lots of power boats started hurtling about the bay, some of them rather nice Rivas, often with a babe scantily clothed on the foredeck. Near 12.00, they all disappeared for lunch drinks, leaving the bay quite choppy.
We rewarded ourselves with a lobster dinner on the front, after loading the boat onto the trailer I had built and my bro had driven down from UK with the Austin Champ. I can't imagine what that meal would cost now with clients being chased if they leave a tip of less than 500 euro..
Many of the other diners were craning their necks, looking for celebs. Who, I expect, were in their villas up in the hills, we just enjoyed the food.
Then , we drove the rig back to UK, another bit of fun, sort of.... It was in 69..

Why not get a suitable trailer and pull it out when not used ?

It was a thought and the boatyard could likely sell me one. However that would then need me to buy a tow vehicle as the Scimitar can only do just over a ton behind. I would then need somewhere to store it and I have nowhere except dry land at Saul. That would cost me a Grand per year, but for the same money at Welford on Avon, it has a permanent mooring. It is an hour's travel to get there, but all in all the most sensible option I think for this year. I will be looking into a riparian mooring for the future, if it can be achieved.

You need to move somewhere where you can put it in a shed for the winter. A heated shed even better!

Apologies for not seeing comments and responding. I fell down my stairs a few months ago and ended up in hospital with neck and spine injuries. Only just getting myself back to work but still on light duties.
