ive not had personal experance of owning a boat but

my mum (this was 8 years ago so dont know if was the same now) had a partner that had a canal boat they been together for a while was an older boat was worth 17 grand so say he had a real problem selling it was for sale for 8 months to a year in the end he gave it way (i think to a) charity boat place the cost or moring fees etc and i think it was coming up for the cheakup thats been mensioned on here earlier in the post

2nd is a family friend had a boat (not long boat type but one that goes on canals)sorry dont know what its called but he thought hed sellit think he was asking 8000 for it older boat but in good working condition loads done over the years and hed owned it for donkey years was on facebook for months and the only offers he had was high hundreds and very low 1000s

You can get lucky with boats - parents had one on the canal in Brecon - closed both ends, and needed transporting to use elsewhere. Sold for a relative song in the end. I could have taken it on - but it worked out abou £300 a month just to keep it afloat.
Tidal estuary is a real no. Back when we were all invinvible (About 28) A friend of mine went from Sharpness down to the Avon Gorge - to get a Bristol moorng- reckoned he'd neve been so nervous.

I have a friend who bought a narrowboat with his lady friend a couple of years ago, currently on a marina at Rufforth. He is now talking of buying a bigger one , selling his house and living aboard full time.

small narrowboat

but your main aim is to design one from scratch and how you would like things to be inside of one the same can be said with caravans and also motorhomes

Like most things you get what you pay for. Things are usually cheap for a reason.

Not necessarily.
If you've got the skills then there's room to make money.
I bought a 64' narrow boat from a salvage broker for £4500, sold it on 12yrs later at a v healthy price that covered all the costs of the rebuild, ownership & left a profit!
There aren't many about but cheap doesn't necessarily mean money pit, or could just be undervalued.

Definitely have your own survey done even for 17k as that's very cheap

Yes, mine was about £600 for the survey plus the cost of the lift. Having the thickness of the Hull measured is worth spending that alone

Just checked the invoice and it was £780 for a full survey and the charge for the lift was £690

In many cases you are forced to have a full survey done every so many years or you can't get insurance. I think mine required one every 5 years.

That is a good price, how big's the boat? I priced up the haul out & survey on the Oxford canal & couldn't get it below £1800.

Completely agree butut the boat he's looking at is supposed to be less that 20
