Mystery Drill

Had a little bit of a find today rummaging around an old workshop, couple of goodies to be found, a rather old compressor (possibly devilbliss), nice 6" Paramo vice, a giant oil cooled welder (think rd250 only trebled) a few choice hand tools and a nice looking drill press.

Wont get a chance to have another look at it for a while until I pull it out, so has anyone got a clue what it is? Looks like it`s got a gearbox instead of belt`s and pullys, so could be fairly robust, even if it doesnt have much height over the table.

Is it worth pulling out? And any guesses on a valuation?

Hi, looks to be solid kit. Obviously gears = good & usually indicates appropriate ratios for metalworking properly.

Did it not have any data plates on at all? Could it be 3 phase? No makers name cast into the covers?

Capacity (range and depth) does look pretty limited, and its only bench mounted. Personally I'd go to about £50 on it (if I was looking for a bench mounted drill, which I never would). If I got to it and put it in lowest ratio, and it wasn't somewhere around 100 bpm, I wouldn't drop a penny on it.

Good luck. Did they have any other useful kit (bigger stuff perhaps?)

It`s a very old Arboga drill or possibly one of the copies.Good machines and last a long time if not abused.One of the gears is made from Tufnol,this is to keep the noise down but also to shear in the event of abuse.
It will be three phase because they use a two speed motor.This is part of the casting and can`t be replaced with something different.

That looks an ace bit of kit, and the vice is worth a couple of quid as well!

phase convertors aren't much for the lower HP ones, a bloke on HWS sells them all the time

We used to have one , good steady machine , the levers at the top lock it in position and let it up and down , it also moves left and right which can be handy ! I remember the gears not being steel

if its 3 phase
its an old motor it will be 415 volt star conection and wont run on the 240v 3phase convertor . only a modern dual voltage will unles u get the 415 converter or have the motor stripped and the suply wires to coils extended out to run on delta . but its hardly worth it

the data plate will tell you what voltage it can run at. if it says 220-240v 3ph easy conversion if not pig of a job

They are usually pole change motors.Also known as Dahlander wound.One set of three windings,star connected but with six tails.
The stator is pressed in to the casting.

Does look similar to the Arboga drill press though I've only seen the floor standing version with Motor above gear head.

Looks like it may be a copy, an Indian company copied the Arboga mill with the motor located underneath so may have done the same with the drill.

Still looks a well built piece of kit though and well worth keeping if you can get it running.

If the motor is two speed it will be arranged for 440Volts only which means using either a phase converter outputting 440v of rewiring the motor internally to suit 240volt three phase and use a variable frequency drive.
I had a motor re-jigged internally at a motor rewind shop for £20.
