I thought that, but then noticed that it appears to be double ended,
and no visible means of "jacking" the two halves away from each other.

So, on a fabric covered aircraft, subject to airflow, they interlock around wing struts?

RWD3M got it. The carefully and accurately carved wood holds the aerodynamically shaped wires apart to keep them from flapping. These appear to be original 1936 ones.

The DH 89 Dragon Rapide, the DH 88 Comet and BAC Concord vie for the most elegant aircraft in my mind.
There was a Dragon Rapide in the hangar at Withybush for while, some 20 years ago.
(This is when I get told I don't know the difference between an 84 and an 89, which is perfectly true!)

Give-away is that the 89 has tapered and rounded wings. In the new year I have to fit all the new fabric to the wing and fuselage joints. Not my fave job, although the smell is fantastic! Ceconite fabric and Nitrate dope. Next will be to separate the Shackleton fuselage into 3 sections and to pull the wings out of the P1A (E E Lightning prototype)

Up until last year there was two Rapides in operation at Duxford that flew over our house on a regular basis, at least one was operating earlier this year.
