Myford Prices

On my recent search for a lathe for a friend (now sorted) I got interested in the Myford range, not interested to buy one... just interested full stop.

Now there is no doubt they are an attractive machine..well I think so anyways, they are obviously well supported with available parts and tooling and probably capable of providing most users with all they require.

The prices however baffles me, similar condition machines range from £400 to nearly £1000, then there is the one I have linked to, ok it needs a clean and the motor may or may not be ok for it but it seemed to go cheap compared to others...what am I missing?

well it started at 99p.. and reached what the highest bidder was pushed too.
it needs cleaning work and the motor may or may not work etc.

it all comes into how much someone is prepared to pay.

That's one of the earlier ones, ML5 or 7 without power cross feed. Also no screw cutting gear box so change wheels if there are any with it.

they still comand a high price power cross feed or not and even without gearbox , thats an old model with grease caps on main bearings more modern have oilers on them .thats about all its worth . a more modern ml7 in good condition will fech over double that

I do not understand the prices of Myfords either, I can appreciate why there is such a range depending upon condition, model and what comes with it, but I ended up buying a Boxford ME10, better lathe, more capable and a lot less money - I could not have purchased the tooling for what I paid for the complete lathe and accessories.

I have a super 7, I paid just shy of a grand for it, but it's on a proper myford cabinet and had some bits and pieces with it, I still definatley overpaid , but it was literally round the corner from me and the guy delivered it so it was worth it to me to not have the hassle. As for the tooling and accessories, there appears to be "myford tax", in as much as soon as it's listed as for a myford the price is far beyond anything similar for any other machine. Other than that, they are a hell of a machine, admittedly it would be nice to have a bigger swing every now and again but for what I use it for its spot on and doesn't take half the garage

A Myford can be easily transported without lifting equipment and a trailer so it appeals to a wider market than most bigger lathes (Boxford size +). Also, being so well known, people with little knowledge of lathes will recognize the name and be drawn to it.
It isn't just Myfords that vary massively either, there was a Chipmaster on the bay for £2,000 from a dealer.

Not once ever regretted my Myford. Fits perfectly on the bench and does very thing I throw at it and plugs into a standard 13aml socket. I paid £900 for the lathe and most of the guys workshop. I would have paid twice that for what I got.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. My super 7 with stand and gear box was only £1200 new from the dealer in Leeds cit

I got my Boxford ME10 for £800 (I think - it may have actually been a bit less after haggling) this came with various 3 and 4 jaw chucks, about 30kg of cutting tools (more than I will probably ever get through) drive dogs, all the change wheels centre drills, spare tailstock chucks and a few other bits and bobs.

Can be lifted by 2 people, single phase and not physically that much larger than a Myford.

Hence I agree with the OP that Myfords are expensive

ive watched a few for a while what i have noticed is if with accessories they sell for far better than just the machine some have been sold clean without motor and still fetch under 500.00

it also depends on where you live and how many people are after the myford system

ive seen it hit 1000,70 that was in the liverpool area

ive watched alot more of the myford ml7

i did find out that the ml10 can only have one regrind smoove on it
