Milling machine.
Vertical has a turning tool dangling down.
Horizontal has tool that goes round like a circular saw sideways.
Lathe has a chuck that goes round and a fixed tool.
Shaper has a fixed tool . Moving In a straight line.
As I say many of these can do other things. Usually slower or with more difficulty.

It was a girl mate. My son went out with her twin for a while several years ago. He went to primary , middle and secondary school. But thanks....its brought a lot of things into sharp focus......
Got it. The trick is keeping it got! Old age don't you know!! I am Ok with lathes as I have two but not really used them in anger. I have made a couple of bearing drifts to size and that's about it. But knowing what they are capable of doing is another thing!
Does not help being xmas either. It puts a lot of things into focus though. I lost my mam through Alzheimer's a couple of years ago after watching her slowly turn to a cabbage. It was like watching her turn back into a newborn mentally. Devastating and we are still coming to terms with it. me and my sister nursed her till she had to go in to a home but even then my sister went in everyday to the end.

That's one of the chunkiest hand-operated shapers I've seen. Bigger than the one HughF had I think and that one was quite large for a hand-shaper. Yours hasn't seen much use either as you can still see some of the oil flaking on the cross-ways.

Thanks for that info Pete. I was wondering what they were for to and was going to add to the thread. They are seized in at the moment so they have had a good spray of wd40 and hopefully they will come out. Perhaps they come into their own if the main unit is swivelled round at an angle! Good idea about the air ram but where to start!

Looking at it again your shaper looks like might have a swivelling head. If that's the case I think that the vee blocks are for holding round stock which you can groove by rotating the head 90 degrees and winding the cross slide across to bring the cutter over the work. It probably explains the unusually long cross slide too.
If you get a minute you might want to see if that's a feasible explanation.
