Myford lathe at auction

Butters John Bee estate agents here in Stoke on Trent have a general Goods auction tomorrow starting at 11 AM and it is also online. To view the catalogue go to their website and click on Assett Auctions then current sales then general auction. Item 265 is the Myford lathe complete with tools and workbench and item 283 is listed as a Vintage metal worker. It is a hand operated milling machine. There is also a few other metalworking lots too.

That Myford looks like an old ML3 or 4, not worth spending much money on.

I think it is a Drummond M Type that Myford took over production of, not sure what Myford called it though. The M Type was my very first lathe, was well knackered but still did a lot of good work on it and the best thing is it taught me a lot

Myford sold for £140 on the hammer. I won the item 283 which I now believe is a metal shaper rather than a milling machine. I will upload a photo tomorrow.

Plenty you can go with a shaper. I was watching a guy cutting internal keyway with one. You can't do that with a milling machine. Did you get a good price?

You can, but it means using it like a very slow shaper

Any where is walking distance if you have the time.

And broaching is quick?

They both referred to that model as the M type.

Here are a few photos of the shaper. Why a shaper as surely it removes metal like a miller but in this case is hand powered. Also is the term lathe used for these machines as a generic term or is that solely for the rotating head machines. As you can probably tell I am a bit of a novice in this part of the engineering discipline and keen to learn. I was hoping to use this machine to knurl a couple of new vice jaws I am making for my sealey 10 inch vice I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

That what I thought. The thing is I was looking for knurling wheels and the ones on the bay use the title" Lathe knurling wheel". As a mill moves side to side I would have thought it could do the knurling by mounting the wheel in its head and have the jaw nailed to the bed so to speak!

I understand the cutting grooves at angles approach but would much prefer the nobbly type of knurling the wheels give.

You need a lathe to do those really.

But I now reread and see its jaws you want. So a shaper could be ideal but slow.
However pdg has already said you would need to harden them after cutting.

The thing is you can make lot of things in each type of machine BUT usually in a different way/method.

Now that I cannot get my head around as the head rotates and the jaws are flat bars and the tools I have seen are like a tool cutter but have a wheel pinned in the head end that rotates! Remember I am a novice at this part of engineering and am On a steep learning curve!

A shaper has a single point cutter and (scrapes) removes metal slowly. A milling machine has a rotating cutter either vertical or horizontal. And depending on the size and rigidity can cut of the top or the side with the cutter rotating.

A lathe can do many things go a milling machine can but not as easy. And a shaper can do many things a milling machine can but usually slower.

That's a very basic description.....

To do the cross hatching you'll need to grind a bit of hss
It gets clamped in the hinged toolholder
Set your jaws up on the bed or in a vice .
And then spend a while swinging on that handle and tweeking your knobs .
When 1 groove is done do it again and again and again and again and again

Having never actually seen a millers business end I envisioned it as being a bit like a wood plane as it went from side to side. Told you I was learning!

Oddly though, hatching a set of vice jaws is the type of job that a shaper is ideal for, and that would be completely unsuited to performing in a mill or lathe

Agree a shaper would do this well and the lathe not being a great candidate (could be done) but a Mill unsuited to this?
Here is my mill making these, same principle as cutting cross hatch on vice jaws except I am just cutting grooves, ie half the hatch.

cocker. I see how that works and that's why I bought it but thought I could perhaps set up a rolling wheel so that it runs along the jaw with the gap between as small as possible to enable the tool to gouge the metal but knowing the pull on the handle will be heavy!

And how would you propose to knurl one flat side of a rectangular piece?

I wouldn't...lol

But then again I would not knurl lathe jaws on a shaper I would cut a diamond pattern with a form tool. (Slowly)
