G'day,
I was recommended to wander over this way to view the tutorials and I thought I'd join the forum as well.
Its my first post so I guess a quick intro is in order. My name is Tony and I live in sunny Queensland, Australia. I bought a welder so that I can restore a 1977 Torana (sort of like a Viva/Opel) back to its former glory.
The welder I have is a Lincoln PowerMig 180c which seems to rate rather highly in the home user field. I have never welded before but Im not afraid to have a bash and learn something new.
Anyway, I got hold of some scrap steel and did a bit of practicing but my welds look like bird droppings.
I am using 0.6mm wire (came with the welder) and Ive set the wire speed and amps according to the manufacturers recommendations for 14 gauge (2mm) steel.
The gas I am using is ArgoShield Light (big bottle) set at 15 litres per ??? with plenty of gas in the tank.
I cleaned up the surface to be welded but not the clamping surface and got stuck into it with the following results......
I have been advised that I didnt have any gas running when I did these welds but Im pretty sure I did. Maybe I didnt have enough flow although the regulator showed 15 litres per ??? (dunno if its per minute or not).
I think (actaully I know) my tip to work distance is too far (15+mm) and I reckon the angle of the torch is too relaxed (about 45 degrees).
I really need to get some plate steel, but this was all I had laying around so I thought I'd have a go at a butt weld.
Thoughts/suggestions?
Cheers,
Tony
