OK, my van has now got a tow bar on it. The reversing sensors don't pick it up. But as sure as hell they will do when the trailer is attached. There is no way to turn the sensors off on the dash, So my thinking is to run a switch and cut one of the wires to the sensors so I can reverse without deafening myself. Can anyone foresee any problems I might come across? It's an 09 plate transit connect.

Yeah, if it's aftermarket then find the power connection and add in a toggle switch.
Although I would have thought it's only an issue when reversing, or do yours stay on permanently? In which case I'd have thought the best way would be to fix them so they only come on in reverse!

Tragically the HBoL doesn't show half the wiring diagrams so I couldn't even tell you if the button is just a connection to something that sends a CANBUS message to the PAM or physically disconnects it.
If you can find the PAM you could probably trace the wiring... Probably something like this (from an F350 but likely to be more similar than to the Mondeo/Focus etc).
Unsure on yours but mine has a dedicated fuse for the PAM. You could swap in a fuse tap/kill switch.

Pull out the reversing light fuse as a temporary measure when towing

Looks like it may be fuse 23 but shared with your A/C.
Is the 2010 the same? This a 2010 Transit Connect (and it does look to be a very very similar location)

If you look here I think if you disconnect pin 9 it will disconnect the reverse detection.

Any Ford I've worked on that's had OE parking sensors, has been equipped with a button to turn them off.
I'd try tracing the wiring from the rear sensors, and see if it goes into the main vehicle loom, or to a module located in/near a rear quarter pillar.
Not all aftermarket installations look like an after thought bodged on/into the bumper. Some actually look very OE like.

I've looked everywhere for a button. even RTFM! The sound is coming from under the dash, sounds like above the accelerator pedal. which corresponds with the diagrams posted, I'll have a poke about tomorrow, after I've got the tequila for the party

That sounds like dealer fit aftermarket kit rather than fitted-at-build. The sound should come through the dash speakers and reduce the volume of the radio etc. Factory fit definitely comes with a 'kill switch', even the Ford dealer-fit kits come with the kill switch, I'm fairly sure there is a 'trailer detect' function (detects trailer brake light current draw) in the BCM that inhibits the rear PDC on that model year transit so it does sound to me like it's not factory fit.
I've heard of the last one, TLA, used it myself a few times, Just hadn't heard the first two. PDC is the same as PAM then.Sorry, BCM = Body Control Module, PDC = Park Distance Control - I use TLA's as a matter of course at work, it's not an easy habit to switch off.....

PAM has a standalone speaker behind dash panel on drivers side.
And having read the system info, vehicles built from 08/2006 onwards don't have a disable switch.
However, looking at the wiring diagram, there is an output for a Trailer E-kit, but the wiring diagrams have very little information about the trailer socket, other than there is a trailer Switch Interface module, which means that information would come with an official Ford trailer wiring kit.
Exact module location appears too vary depending on age, but around drivers RH knee area with the speaker pointing rearwards -
