Sometimes in the V5 it says what the car is legal to tow if not in the owners manual, as long as you dont go over that you'll be fine.
My car is legal to tow 450kg un braked and 1100kg braked, I could tow the full 1100kg without the licence, BUT the trailer cant have a gross weight of any more than 1100kg.

so as long as I don't exceed the gross weight of the trailer or the legal towing weight unbraked then I am good to go? if I do buy a trailer it will be after I have bought a bigger mig and it will be a dog that needs repairing and modifying so I don't need to have it tested

Yes, As long as it doesn't exceed the vehicles max unbaked towing weight you should be fine , feel free to message me if you need more help, it takes a bit of explaining to understand but once you understand you'll be fine. Also if your going to upgrade the suspension on a trailer build id say fit leaf spring suspension not the type i've used, the ones on mine now need replacing every few years because it gets worn out and ends up making the wheels sit funny when you have weight on it.

Also BB, when you talk about 'not unloading the van', be very careful not exceed the Gross Train Weight for the combined load. i.e. your trailer is OK as a % of the vehicles weight, but the junk in the van puts you over the max for everything.

I wouldn't be using the van if I had a trailer. the reason I want a trailer is so I can use the car for picking things up instead of having to empty the van. go and pick what ever it is up, then load the van back up again afterwards. much easier to just hitch up a trailer to the car lol
