Hahaha, yep oxy acetylene, the burning torch is on the bench as I'd just swapped it for the welding torch, thanks for the compliment

I had a Micra with a slight weep down the front of the sump. I took it off and gave it a bit of love with the wire brush as the first step of prep prior to welding and it turned into something resembling a colander. I was amazed at how little it was leaking.

I did the same on a friends Vauxhall Fontana.
I did the sump, both diff covers.

All had rusted were the water had settled out and the oil sat on top of the water.
But the steel was very thin, even in the good parts.

The local dealer had the parts on back order, it was 9 mouths after we placed the order did they tell us the parts were in.

I bought a mk1 golf for my wife years ago, this had thrown a rod & put a hole in the sump. I found a second hand Polo engine, but without a sump, so I beat the sump back to shape & migged a patch on it.

It wasn't the 1.7 litre naturally aspirated isuzu diesel lump by any chance ?. My 3 year old Corsa with the same lump developed rust holes in the sump at the front of the engine, needing a welded repair. After 4 years the paint started peeling off the inside the sump blocking the coarse oil filter on the oil pump suction, losing all oil pressure in the process. Fortunately it blocked off a few miles from home & able to get it towed home. Luckily after cleaning the filter, no damage appeared to have been done. It ran onto 130,000 miles.

It was a 1.2 Corsa B with the faded pink paintwork. I took the sump off to weld it and wire brushed it to find a few more pinholes and cleaned it up inside before it went back on. It was a sweet motor ran for another couple of years before she swapped it. If it had been as bad as the original post one I'd have cut the bottom out and put a flat one in

That looks like the maze in episode three of the Crystal maze .

I had an old farmers mini like that brought to me for , " Can you weld this Dave ? , the mini was as a old as him . He used to drive around with a piece of thick ply wood instead of a floor pan . I did my best , god only knows why it passed the MOT .
