The brass gear is the back gear

massively helpful pics and description, thanks a lot. ive set this now so the locking ring is as close as it can be with the back gear still functioning.

Yes very similar other than I've got coolant controls cast into the base. Though lacking a lot of the extras yours has, very jealous, change gears, Micrometer stop etc.

You're welcome, I struggled to find any info or much about them when I was stripping it down. Need to get it used more really.

my coolant pump seems to be an oddball addition...the sump seems genuine, but the pump diesnt seem to be. thats in the garden at the moment as it was clogged and blocked up so jetwashed the sump out, have filled it with degreaser and le tthe coolant pick up saok in it too. would be nice to have suds working

am i right in thinking the tailstock is MT2? it look sabout right for mt2. the onyl tool that didnt come with it was a live centre and its quicker to buy a cheap one for now before making my own at some point

Yeah MT2 tailstock, should also be an MT2 collect for the headstock in the bunch.

ah...i was wondering what some of those were...there are a few, maybe 4x 5c collets that dont have any slots in them to allow clamping...

do you know if metric 5c collets share the same thread as the imperial ones? i.e. use the same drawbar?

i also have a few 5c dead centres as well, and 2 drive plates which i thought was a nice touch

Looks a lovely lathe,particularly the headstock/bed length ratio,similar ratio to a DSG and many of us know what that results in. .

apart from the belt failing on me (which i suspected it would, could hear flapping when i ran it saturday before loading it) it runs well and the capacity is plenty for me.

belt arriving by thursday, so will get that put back on, in th mean time i can sort through the bucket of lathe tools, grind up the ones i know im going to use, re-profile the imperial threading tools to metric and appears i need to make a 45 degree chamfer tool, cant seem to see one in the assortment.

Yes.

In an important respect, the only difference between a metric and imperial 5C collet is what is written on the box. You could ask Hardinge to supply you a metric collet to suit 12.7mm diameter material.

It could be worth checking the threading tools as if they have been used for UN threads rather than Whitworth. they can be used for metric with no modification.

thats good to know. i have a full box of imperial 5c collets, wouldnt mind changing them for nominal metric sizes as thats more likely what im going to be using, even if making a part with imperial measurements its going to start from nominal metric stock.

i havent looked a them yet but i have a thread tool gauge here so can check between 60 or 55 degree angles. i also have a very reasonable stack of various sized HSS blanks/broken HSS tools with plenty of meat left on the shank so can grind them as needed

so, first post of the additional kit that came with the lathe. a fair bit appears to be original to the lathe, like the steady rest that is the same colour...other bits dont appear to be original, in as much as they are grey and some are green.

but, first up is the milling attachment.

adjustable in 2 axis, and for rotation as well as it mounts in place of the compund slide, its heavy for its size and seems very well made. even in its current state covered in grime and saw dust it is butter smooth to turn the handwheels that both appear to have 1 thou increments.

need to give it a clean up and figure out something for material holding. the 2 mounting holes line up with the 2 studs that hold the compound slide on which makes me think it is off another model A lathe, or was just never painted with the rest of it.

this is perfect for me, as i really dont have space for a 'good' mill, if i were ever to get one there would be no option but to get a bench mounted one which arent known for being very good, but with this attachment, and a future project i have planned, i wont really need a mill as i can tackle quite a lot in the lathe with this set up, especially considering the myford dividing head that attaches to the spindle as well. the travel on the lathe carriage, cross slide, the compound axis of this attachment, and the height adjustment of this attachment mean i could technically tackle some decent sized projects with fairly complex shapes, although my mind sits solely with my sons desire to make a scratch built RC rock crawler at the moment.

i will likely clean it up on the weekend, bolt it on and make a few test cuts with one of the end mills that was included, held in a collet of course.

in the future, once every attachment is cleaned and tested, i am considering painting the lathe and all attachments to match, although i may still be saying that in 30 years 00

and the rest of the 'large' bits

so we have a few chucks, a 5" burnerd 3 jaw, nice and smooth, even clamping force

a 6" burnerd 4 jaw, has 1 stiff scroll/jaw, have yet to inspect

a 5" pratt that is incredibly stiff (hence why the jaws are out of it, everything is jammed full of fine saw dust, this lathe was sadly used for wood more than metal in the later years)

those 3 all have backplates with the spindle thread, so will mount straight on, and all 3 show less than 0.03mm run out or 1 thou for those watching in black and white

then there is this 6" seemingly unbranded 3 jaw with no backing plate and no way of currently mounting it (sounds like an ideal weld positioner chuck if you ask me)

i also have a fair collection of different jaws, however i have no idea yet which chucks they match.

there was this 9" face plate also

there are also 2 or 3 4" faceplate/drive plates, 1 with a dog pin.

now onto something different we have this rather large V block

and hiding behind it we have 1 of 2 items that i am unsure of. they appear to be some sort of fine adjust quill, but honeslty i have no idea so if anyone does, id appreciate the knowledge. 1 is mounted to a dovetail plate, the other isnt

then we have the steady rest, in very good condition

and then finally for now, the 2x multifix tool posts. i also have 5x straight tool holders and 4x boring tool holders, although 2 of those are missing clamping screws and 1 is missing the adjustment bracket, however i only actually need 2 of them, the other tools all sit in the straight holders.

there is other stuff, but as yet unsorted so will post that as and when.

oh, also forgot, these 3 5c spindle centres. there are a few mt2 dead centres too, but they arent nearly as interesting

and this box of 5c collets including a few 5c-mt2 adapters, and one apparentyl home made brass square collet (i also have the drawbar)

and this mt2 1-13mm keyless tailstock chuck (the centre drill also came with it)

along with this lushington precise offset boring head which appears to also be 5c compatible, which makes my milling attachment even move useful
