My sister's gate fail....

Top hinge on her side gate snapped off. She said it had been getting progressively more difficult to open and eventually broke.

I ground it down, preheated and then welded it up. Should have taken a pic at that point.

I then tried to close the gate to weld up the other side but could feel the hinge wasn't moving. The weld snapped.

Tried to hammer the top of the hinge off but it wouldn't budge. Will buy a new hinge, cut off the old one and weld on the new one.

lack of grease is the problem....
try and free the pin off with some heat....it's not the cost of the hinge they just never fit the same unless u change top and bottom together...

Tried with map gas, hammer and chisel to get it to move by no joy. Need oxy but don't have access.

I've got something very similar on my workshop doors (no grease nipple) - they have been there about 20 years and I have never had the need to re-grease them - still as free and smooth as the day I put them there.

I would put the socket on top, so it can't fill with rain water.

That's what I have done..... if you have both the other way up doesn't the gate / door just drop to the floor??

Looking at the angle of the hinge socket/pin I would say they are in bind, unless aligned top and bottom as a pair there will always be a twisting effect.

Question why?
There is no need to preheat something like that.
It's not thick at all, unless the box section is a square bar but it would be little bit overkill.

Thickish steel for me, limited power from welder plus limited experience on anything apart fromm car body work = better to be safe than sorry.

Often the problem with mig, and this photo is an excellent example of it. It can look pretty with very little penetration sometimes.
