my oxford stopped working. help

hi all, i was welding yesterday and the old girl made some strange noises, it started to bubble in side where the oil is and then blew the fuse. i changed the fuse and switched it on and it blew it again. can anyone give me any advice trying to fix this? cheers

disaster! have you got a multimeter? Try measuring from L to N with the beast turned on and report back. You are checking the primary windings for resistance you should get around about an ohm. The rest of the testing you need an insulation resistance tester. I will bring mine with me on Sat if you like.

hi, how r u. i havent got a multi tester unfortunatley, if you could bring one on sat that would be great. ive been using my old buzz box to finsh of my trailer project, but its not the same. ive got all day off so ill take the old girl apart and have a look in side. cheers

check for loose connections and the like. there isn't much to them. Might be worth a look @ the selector switch contacts as a bad connection there would result in excessive heat and maybe popping noise etc.

The welder works by magnetism from the primary windings been induced into an iron core and transferred onto secondary windings. The selector switch changes the number of turns on secondary windings of the transformer (variable tap)

they do go wrong, iv killed both an oxford and a pickenhill, the small oxford went in much the same way blew the fuse, there was continuity between L&N so I scraped it.....the pickenhill lost various settings then the 80V and then would only run on 1PH I scraped that also....

It's usually terminal when the oil cooled start blowing fuses straight away...primary windings or something.

Zardoz, that should change over to 230v as well, just by swapping the connections under the raised box on top of it

Not all Oxfords had the 240 volt option. Many of the bigger sets had 400/415/440 only tappings. W/A
