hi guys and gals

i haven't made a post in a while , the reason i'm working in a garage now and have 0 time to my self.

but!.... i managed to get some time off from work and Traveled to Bute in Scotland, and purchased a van in Glasgow which was for sale on on eBay

here's some photos and its a camper. its does need some welding work , but my future plan is to keep it a camper still but also my future business for a mobile mechanic.

now i need a generator to run a air compressor , a welder ( if necessary) and any power tool and a set of lights if i'm in the dark. (if i do work in the dark)

Now the generator side of things i'm looking at is kiplor ID6000 , the only reason is because i have read that a pure sine wave is a must on a welder. due to the carrier wave is alot more cleaner then a normal generator and can reek havok with a welder, and possibly damage it?

any advice would be fab heres me pics of me camper

I helped a mate fit out one of these a couple of years ago, for autograss.
Funny moment, made a new inner panel for the side door, pushed the firtree buttons into the side door, and it came clean off the runners

weight of camper

you need to get it weighed first as most camper vans normally don't have a lot of spare capacity for putting tools welders compressors etc in
the iveco is a 3.5 ton van by the look of it and LWB so heavy to start with

by old merc 608 LWB van weighed empty 2.75 tons empty as a fully built camper 6 berth with high top came in at 4.75 tons so all the furniture fitting
water tanks toilet etc weighed in at 2 tons but as it was a 6 ton van left plenty of spare capacity

yah I did think about the weight issue.... it was more a thought for the business idea not set in concrete. Although id like to do is rip all the stuff out and put in some more light weight stuff from a company I found on line which has all the dimensions for this van. and all the stuff I have in it can either be binned or be sold on to fund it becouse the stuff is rather heavy. ill keep all the electrics and points and water tanks etc , I did like the rock and roll beds

What about this as a dedicated motor home and a second smaller more economical van for work?

Missing link or suggesting buying another vehicle as well ? Surely that would be less economical than running one van ?

update.

i drove it home from glasow , it did it with little trouble.

on the way i found it has some faults grrr

glow plug heater flashes for ages or so so possibly new glow plugs joy!
slight wheel imbalance
slightly pulls to the left
at 60mph feels very wolly possible ball joint , tie rod or track arm bush - there is alot of play in the steering at 60ish
none lockable fuel filler cap - will need one of them! but unsure of the size?
plastic couling was rubbing on the steering wheel , during the drive home as the steering linkage moved up and down it would rub , so a small mod sorted that ( removed it)
gearbox select is a pain in the bum its very difficult to change gear ( might change the gear oil for something with more viscosity and fully synthetic )
small head light bulb has blown
no water in the windscreen jets
front pads are slightly low
and when reversing i think i could hear a uj rattling.

when i turn the key off the engine continues to run , so possibly the ignition barrel is duff or the injection pump solenoid is sticking open or its feeding from the oil eek!

I had a 35-10 for work. Compared to our Fiat ducatos, citroen Relays, it was slow and un economical.

The gearboxes are very "commercial" in their build and so don't change like a car box.
A little bit of rev matching worked really well and I could drive it without thinking about it but when I was selling it, people were having some serious trouble changing gear.
To the point that they said the box was knackered. So I'd have to drive it around to show them that it's not knackered. Just the way that commercial boxes are.

steering could be King pins if it's on a beam axle not sure on that model you normally do get a bit of play in the steering think you are allowed 50mm at the wheel steering box should be adjustable
wheel balance you will need a commercial tyre place to balance them not a car place wheel centre holes too big for car balancer

that is a good point although , iv looked underneath and its a jungle of cable ties and small springs holding things together. ill upload the photos later but its abit of a joke and I need to sort it out , to make it less stressful to drive.

I also must stop driving my car like the van which is far more lighter.
